#FirstFriday: Must-See October Exhibitions

Every month, we highlight exhibitions, group shows, events, and workshops that feature WSW artists, we share the shows near and far that make up our monthly must-see list.


New York

Jayoung Yoon (Ora Schneider Regional Residency Grant ’18) has a solo show called Sowing Seeds of Emptiness at the Garrison Art Center, Garrison NY. The show will be on view from September 24 – November 6, 2022, and there will be an artist’s talk on Saturday, October 8, at 2:30 pm.

Clarissa Sligh (Artist’s Book Residency Grant ’98 and ’04) has work in the exhibition Books Revisited, which will be on view at Center for Book Arts (28 W 27th St, 3rd Fl) from Friday, October 7 through Saturday, December 10, 2022.

Damali Abrams (Right Now! Production Grant ’20, Studio Workspace Residency ’22) is in a show titled Our Mother’s Garden at The Gallery at Ace Hotel Brooklyn, presented by Residency Unlimited. It will be on view October 1st – 30th, with an opening reception on October 5th, from 5 – 9PM.


Minnesota

Savannah Bustillo (Studio Intern ’19) and Erin Moore (Studio Intern ’22) are both finalists for the MCBA Prize, presented by the Minneapolis Center for Book Arts (MCBA). Other WSW alumnx who were semi-finalists include Colette Fu (Artist’s Book Residency Grant ’22), Wendy Fernstrum (Studio Workspace Residency ’12), Maureen Cummins (Artist’s Book Residency Grant ’98 and ’03, Studio Workspace Residency ’00 and ’06), and Colleen Mullins (Artist’s Book Residency ’98). All artists are included in the 2022 MCBA Prize Exhibition which will be open at the MCBA Main Gallery until October 15, 2022.


Pennsylvania

Natalia Arbelaez has work in the 2022 Sylvia J. Smith ’73 Artist in Residence Exhibition at the Goodyear Gallery at Dickinson College from October 26th – November 16th 2022.


Illinois

Laura Berman (Studio Intern ’97) is in Meeting of Makers, a group exhibition at NIU’s Jack Olson Gallery near Chicago. This show runs Sept 1–October 27 and features eight artists working with multiples, printmaking and collaboration.


Massachusetts

Mika Obayashi has a solo show titled Gospel of Three Dimensions at Jewett Art Gallery in Wellesley, MA. There is a closing reception October 28th, 4 – 5:30PM.

Erin Woodbrey (Studio Internship ’07) and Anina Major (Studio Residency Grant ’21) have work in the group show CELEBRATION on view until November 26th at the GAA Gallery in Provincetown.


New Jersey

Karen J Revis (Studio Workspace Residency ’14) is featured in a show titled Double Consciousness at the Mueller Art Gallery in Caldwell, NJ on view until October 15, 2022.


Georgia

Kelly Taylor Mitchell (Studio Workspace Residency ’21) has a solo show titled Kin, Spirit, Seed at Westobou Gallery in Augusta, GA, on view until October 15th, 2022.


California

Anina Major (Studio Residency Grant ’21) has a solo show titled Inheritance at Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Los Angeles that will be on view from September 17th through October 22nd, 2022


Japan

Karen Donnellan (Studio Workspace Residency ’21) has work in the group show New Glass Now at the Toyama Glass Museum in Toyama, Japan. The show is on view until October 16th.
