Summer Assistantship
WSW’s Summer Assistantships provide emerging artists and arts workers with hands-on experience supporting the Summer Art Institute (SAI), WSW’s seasonal workshop program. Summer Assistants work directly with SAI instructors, students, and WSW staff to help workshops run smoothly and assist with the ongoing operations of the facility. This is an incredible opportunity to assist with and participate in up to seven workshops; work closely with a high volume of teaching artists who are leaders in the fields of printmaking, papermaking, and book arts; and gain knowledge and technical skills across a variety of mediums.
This is a focused summer position. Unlike WSW’s Studio Internship, Summer Assistants work specifically on the delivery of Summer Art Institute workshops and do not have ongoing responsibilities for WSW’s resident artists, artist’s book production, or other year-round studio projects.
Responsibilities
- Assisting SAI instructors with workshop preparation, setup, and breakdown
- Supporting instructors and students during SAI workshop hours
- Helping prepare studio spaces, materials, tools, and equipment for workshops
- Assisting with demonstrations, material distribution, cleanup, and other workshop logistics
- Maintaining studio functionality: servicing and troubleshooting equipment, performing organizational and cleaning projects, turning over instructor housing, and meal preparation support
- Communicating with WSW staff and instructors about workshop needs and schedules
Required
- Experience with one or more of WSW’s studio areas, including printmaking, papermaking, book arts, letterpress, ceramics, or related studio practices
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently as well as collaboratively
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Enthusiasm for working with artists, instructors, and students in a studio environment
- Ability to work a flexible schedule during the Summer Art Institute
- Must be eligible to work in the United States
- Must be present for the full duration of the SAI workshop schedule
Compensation & Schedule
All assistantships include a private room in WSW’s on-campus Anne Atwood House and a stipend of $700/month. Interns work an average of 40 hours/week, generally Monday through Friday, 9:00-5:00, but the schedule may change to accommodate SAI programming. Interns have access to the studios for their own work outside of regular working hours and with respect to studio programming.
