#FirstFriday: October Exhibitions We Love

Highlighting exhibitions that feature the work of WSW artists, we share the shows, near and far, that make up our monthly must-see list.

Leslie Nichols‘ Any Name You Please (left), created during her WSW residency, was awarded the Director’s Cut Award at Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in New Impressions 2017. The exhibition has now traveled to School of Visual Concepts, Seattle, WA and will be on view through October 31!

New York

Zarina Hashmi (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’91) has a solo exhibition Zarina: Dark Roads at NYU’s Asian/Pacific/American Institute Gallery, Manhattan. Show runs through February 2, 2018.

Fay Ku (Studio Grant resident ’11) is showing work in the group exhibition Latent Content Analysis at the Lodge Gallery, Manhattan. Hurry—show closes October 6!

Clarissa Sligh (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’88, ’04) is showing her artist’s books in The Legacy of Lynching: Confronting Racial Terror in America at the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn. Hurry—show closes October 8!

Claire Fouquet and Patty Smith (Artist’s Book Grant residents ’16) have a solo show featuring their collaborative work On the Other Side at A.I.R. Gallery, Brooklyn. The exhibition includes their WSW artists’ book, also titled On the Other Side, read about it on our blog! Hurry—show closes October 8!

Tatana Kellner (WSW Co-founder), Mariella Bisson (Studio Workspace resident ’08), Jill Parisi (Studio Grant resident ’04), Emily Puthoff (Studio intern ’96, Ora Schneider Grant resident ’11), Judy Hoyt (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’83), Judith Mohns (Studio Workspace resident ’98, Artist’s Book Grant resident ’03), Talya Baharal (Studio Grant resident ’02), Marian Schoettle (Ora Schneider Regional Grant resident ’12), and Patty Tyrol (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’83) are showing work in Artists as Innovators at the SUNY Ulster Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery, Stone Ridge. Show closes October 20.

Jenny Snider (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’83) is showing work in the group exhibition Hold That Thought at the Edward Thorp Gallery, Manhattan. Show closes October 21.

Heather Kapplow (Public Art Grant resident ’17) is participating in Small Works for Big Change, an art benefit for the Sylvia Rivera Law Project on October 21, 4 – 7 pm. Find it at Participant Inc, Manhattan.

Patty Smith and Claire Fouquet‘s WSW book, On the Other Side, is in their exhibition the same name at A.I.R. Gallery, Brooklyn!

Karen Revis (Studio Workspace Resident ‘14), Zoe Hawk (Studio Workspace resident ’16), Julia Morrisroe (Studio Workspace resident ’06), Cynthia Back (Studio Workspace Resident ’14), Mei Fung Elizabeth Chan (Studio intern ’14) and Tatana Kellner (WSW co-founder) are showing work in the group exhibition 3rd Annual Hand Pulled Prints: The Current Practice at Site:Brooklyn Gallery, Brooklyn. Show closes October 22.

Tona Wilson (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’10, Art-in-Ed Artist’s Book Grant resident ’17) is showing work at WSW’s own gallery through October 29.

Shu-Mei Chan (Studio Grant resident ’13) is showing work in the two-person exhibition Unless & Until: New Structures by Xi Nan and Shu-Mei Chan at Sculpture Space NYC, Long Island City. Show closes October 29; opening reception October 6, 6 – 9 pm.

Lorrie Fredette (Studio Workspace resident ’10) co-curated the exhibition Indigo: The Seventh Color at LABspace, Hillsdale. Show runs October 14 – November 4; opening reception October 14, 5 – 7:30 pm.

Rejin Leys (Studio intern ’89) is showing work in Uptown: Nasty Women/Bad Hombres at El Museo del Barrio, Manhattan. The exhibition highlights the work of artists addressing sexism, racism, homophobia, media, politics, health, the environment, and violence through various media. Show runs through November 5.

Tayo Heuser (Studio Workspace resident ’17) is showing work in the group exhibition Providence x Hudson: Prevailing Mysteries at Walnut Hill Fine Art, Hudson. Show runs October 7 – November 12; opening reception October 7, 4 – 6 pm. View showcard here.

Phyllis Kudder Sullivan (Studio Workspace resident ’12) is showing work in Woven World: Selections from Cavin-Morris Gallery at Skidmore College’s Schick Art Gallery, Saratoga Springs. Show runs October 19 – November 19.

Tate Klacsmann (Studio Workspace resident ’16) is showing work in the group exhibition Loving Beauty More Than Efficiency at Scarlet Seven Gallery, Troy, NY. Show runs October 22 – November 19.

Lise Prown (Chili Bowl Workspace resident ’17) is showing work in Give Us the Vote, A Contemporary Art Exhibition at Arts Westchester, White Plains. Show runs October 10 – January 27, 2018; opening reception October 7, 4 – 6 pm.

Rejin Leys (Studio intern ’89) and Tara Sabharwal (Studio Workspace resident ’16) are showing work in Art in FLUX‘s group exhibition Songs of Freedom at JCC Harlem. Show runs through April, 2018.

Tona Wilson is showing work as part of her WSW Artist’s Book Grant Residency in WSW’s new gallery through October 29!

Northeast

Heather Kapplow (Public Art Grant resident ’17) is showing the conceptual detritus which fell from her recent residency, Cut Corners, in the group exhibition Handled at Gallery 263, Cambridge, MA. Hurry—show closes October 7!

Erin Woodbrey (Studio intern ’07) has a solo show, Time Mothers, at the Gaa Gallery, Provincetown, MA. Hurry—show closes October 8!

Tayo Heuser (Studio Workspace resident ’17) is showing work in the group exhibition Perspectives at the Bristol Art Museum, Bristol, RI. Read about Tayo’s recent work on our blog and hurry—show closes October 15!

Phyllis Kudder Sullivan (Studio Workspace resident ’12) is showing work in All Things Considered 9: Basketry in the 21st Century, a traveling exhibition presented by the National Basketry Organization. It is currently at Peters Valley School of Craft, Layton, NJ and will travel to the Society of Arts + Crafts, Boston, MA next year. Current show (at Peters Valley) closes October 29.

Phyllis Kudder Sullivan (Studio Workspace resident ’12) is showing work in the group exhibition Of Art and Craft at the Flinn Gallery in the Greenwich Library, Greenwich, CT. Show runs October 26 – December 6.

Heather Kapplow (Public Art Grant resident ’17) is showing work in the future of work at Fort Point Arts Community. Show runs October 7 – January 6 2018; opening reception October 25, 5:30 – 7:30 pm.

Kathy Hettinga (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’14) is showing her work, Dante’s Inferno: the Gates of Hell, in the Art for Great Books series, Veritas Academy, Lancaster, PA. Show runs through June 1, 2018.

Cheyenne Mallo (Studio intern ’11) is showing work in an exhibition honoring her former print professor Bernice Ficek-Swenson’s retirement from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls in Gallery 101, Kleinpell Fine Arts, River Falls, WI. Hurry—show closes October 6!

Mary Gordon (Summer intern ’14, Studio intern ’16) is showing work in the portfolio exhibition Preservation: a collaborative print exchange at the Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence, KS. Show runs through November 8.

Paula McCartney (Production Grant resident ’05) is exhibiting the artist’s book made during her WSW residency in her solo exhibition, Bird Watching, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, IN. Hurry—show closes October 8!

Mary Gordon (Summer intern ’14, Studio intern ’16) is showing work in the 2017 Mid America Print Council Juried Members’ Exhibition at the Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence, KS. Show closes October 21.

Laura Berman (Studio intern ’97) has a solo show Setting Space at Weinberger Fine Art, Kansas City, MO. Show runs through October 28.

Cheyenne Mallo (Studio intern ’11) is showing work in the group exhibition The Art of the Drink at the The Art Center, Butler, PA. The show, focusing on beer label art and vessels for storing, pouring, and drinking all things spirited, runs October 11 – November 3; closing reception November 3. Find the Facebook event here.

Amy Schmierbach (Art-in-Ed Artist’s Book Grant resident ’99, Studio intern ’96) has a solo exhibition at 5.4.7 Art Center in Greensburg, KS. Show runs through November 15.

West

Alayna Rasile Digrindakis (Chili Bowl Workspace resident ’12) is in the two person show TEXTUS with Lauren Robert Korn at the Holter Museum of Art, Helena, MT. Show runs through October 27. We spoke to Alayna recently—check it out on our blog!

Anna Thompson’s (Studio intern ’13) Richmond, VA-based design and photography studio Palindrome Creative Co. is taking part in the city’s First Friday event. Don’t miss—the First Friday is October 6!

Florence Neal (Studio Workspace resident ’09) is showing work in the group show Contemporary Connections: Woodcuts at the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, Laurel, MS. Show runs through October 29.

Cheyenne Mallo (Studio intern ’11) is showing work in the online exhibition Cup: The Intimate Object XIII by Charlie Cummings Gallery. Show runs October 7 – November 3.

Did you know: Libby Scarlett‘s I Can’t See You is in the group exhibition Strelnikov’s Glasses and Other Stories at HOME, Manchester, UK through October 29!

International

Laura Manfredi‘s (Art-in-Ed Workspace resident ’16) solo show Fragile is on view at Burg Hasegg Münze Hall, Tyrol, Austria. Inspired by the archaeological collection held by the site’s museum, the exhibition is dedicated to the concept of fragility. Elisabeth S. Clark (Studio Grant resident ’12) is performing a new work, Éclat at the 14th Biennele de Lyon: Floating Worlds over the October 14-15 weekend. See records from her performances here!

Tara Sabharwal (Studio Workspace resident ’16; Beisinghoff resident ’17) has a solo show, The Open Window at Art Alive Gallery, New Delhi, India. Show closes October 25; view showcard here!

Libby Scarlett (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’14) has a work, I Can’t See You, in the group exhibition Strelnikov’s Glasses and Other Stories at HOME, Manchester, UK. Twenty-four artists, designers, and filmmakers were asked to respond to a pair of glasses in film. Show runs through October 29.
