#FirstFriday: Summer Exhibitions We Love

Highlighting exhibitions that feature the work of WSW artists, we share the shows, near and far, that make up our monthly must-see list.

New York

T. Klacsmann (Studio Workspace resident ’16) is showing work in the work in a group exhibition, Small Works (H-N), at the Woodstock Artist Association and Museum, Woodstock. Hurry—show closes June 10!

Tatana Kellner (WSW co-founder) and Barbara Beisinghoff (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’09) are showing work in the IPCNY’s exhibition Paper/Print: American Hand Papermaking, 1960s to Today, Manhattan. WSW-published artists’ books of B11226: Fifty Years of Silence, Eugene Kellner’s Story (Kellner) and The Angel is My Watermark (Beisinghoff) will be on view through June 14.

Jayoung Yoon (Ora Schneider Regional Grant resident ’18) is showing work in the group exhibition Getting Personal at SFA Projects, Manhattan. The exhibition “puts forward ten female artists whose artwork express deeply personal thoughts, emotional energies, and societal commentary” to examine the role and representation of women in contemporary society. Show closes June 17.

Maureen Cummins (Studio Workspace resident ’06, ’00; Artist’s Book Grant resident ’03, ’98) is showing work in the exhibition Freud on the Couch: Psyche in the Book at the Center for Book Arts, Manhattan. Show closes June 20, then travels to Minnesota Center for Book Arts and will be on view July 20 – September 30. 

Golnar Adili (Studio Grant resident ’15) is showing in the 2017 Workspace Artist-in-Residence exhibition at the Center for Book Arts, Manhattan. Show closes June 20.

Look familiar? That’s because Golnar Adili is teaching a Summer Art Institute workshop this August. See her work CBA’s  2017 Workspace Artist-in-Residence exhibition through June 20!

Rejin Leys (Studio intern ’89) will be on residency with the Works on Water & Underwater New York, Governor’s Island. If you’re in the area, keep an eye out for periodic public programs and exhibitions—including open studios—through June 24!

Jayoung Yoon (Ora Schneider Regional Grant resident ’18) is showing work in Far + Wide at the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum, Woodstock. Show runs June 16 – July 15; opening reception June 23, 4 – 6 pm.

Pamela J. Wallace (Ora Schneider Regional Grant resident ’12) and Jayoung Yoon (Ora Schneider Regional Grant resident ’18) are showing work in the ArtsWestchester Triennial, White Plains, NY. Show runs through July 28.

Cara Lynch (Studio Workspace resident ’14) is showing work in the group exhibition On Reflection with Urban Glass at the Agnes Varis Art Center, Brooklyn. Show runs through July 28.

Cheryl Paswater (Studio Workspace resident ’13, ’14) will have work in the group exhibition Chain Reaction at The Painting Center, Manhattan. Show runs July 19 – August 9; opening reception July 19, 6 – 8 pm.

Jayoung Yoon (Ora Schneider Regional Grant resident ’18) and WSW co-founders Ann Kalmbach and Tatana Kellner will have work in New Prints 2018/Summer at IPCNY, Manhattan. Kalmbach and Kellner’s latest WSW-published book, Whereas, We Declare, will be on view. Show runs June 26 – September 22; opening reception June 28.

Katie Ford (Studio intern ’10, Legacy Grant resident ’18) will have her work, Preparedness Blankets, in summer exhibition Change of State at the Wassaic Project, Wassaic. Show runs through September 22.

Where can you find the latest WSW-published artist’ book? Ann Kalmbach and Tatana Kellner’s Whereas, We Declare will be in New Prints 2018/Summer at IPCNY, Manhattan! When you’re there (show runs June 26 – September 22) be sure to find work by Ora Schneider Regional Grant alumna Jayoung Yoon.

Northeast and Mid-Atlantic

T. Klacsmann (Studio Workspace resident ’16) has a solo show, Ex Amino, at the Tremaine Gallery of the Hotchkiss School, Lakeville, CT. Hurry—show closes June 2!

DM Witman (Studio Workspace resident ’12) is showing work in the 2018 Biennial at the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME. Hurry—show closes June 3!

Phyllis Kudder Sullivan (Studio Workspace resident ’12) is showing work in the group exhibition All Things Considered at the Society of Arts + Crafts, in collaboration with the National Basketry Organization, Boston, MA. Show runs through June 9.

Cheyenne Mallo (Studio intern ’11) is showing work in Sweet Suggestions, an exhibition of dessert wares, at the Worcester Center for Crafts, Worcester, MA. Show closes June 15 in their gallery store (hours Tues- Sat, 10AM-5PM)!

Fafnir Adamites (Studio Grant resident ’17) is showing work in the two-person exhibition, Unturned, at Fountain Street Gallery, Boston, MA. Show runs July 5 – 29; opening reception July 6, 6 – 8 pm.

Amanda Thackray (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’09) is showing work in the group exhibition Approaching Vibrancy at Gallery at 14 Maple, Morristown, NJ. Show runs through August 24.

Midwest

Carson Fox (Studio Grant resident ’00) has a solo exhibition, Sticks and Stones, at Linda Warren Projects, Chicago, IL. Hurry—show closes June 2!

Laura Berman (Studio intern ’97) is showing work in the three-person exhibition Organic Forms at Olson Larsen Gallery, Des Moines, IA. Hurry—show closes June 9!

Jen P. Harris (Ora Schneider Regional Grant resident ’12) and Rachel Kauff (Studio intern ’12) are showing work in the exhibition Bridge Work at Var West Gallery, Milwaukee, WI. Show closes June 23.

Kathy Hettinga (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’14) is showing her diptych, Dairy Farm, Weld CO, 1980 and 2014, at The Four Chapter Gallery, Kansas City, MO through July 27.

Taryn McMahon (Dodge Grant resident ’08) and Kristina Paabus (Studio Grant resident ’11) are showing work in the group exhibition Unknown Terrain at the Morgan Paper Conservatory, Cleveland, OH. Show runs July 6 – August 11; opening reception July 6, 6 – 9 pm.

Nicole Donnelly (Studio Workspace resident ’10) and Cara Lynch (Studio Workspace resident ’14) are showing work in the 2017 Artists-in-Residence exhibition at the Morgan Paper Conservatory, Cleveland, OH. Show runs August 17 – September 15; opening reception August 17, 6 – 9 pm.

South

Catherine Nelson (Studio Workspace resident ’16) will have her installation, A Tussle with the Genius Loci, on view at Book Club Gallery, New Orleans, LA. The opening will feature an ongoing performance by Known Mass using the tools of choreographer Deborah Hay and co-choreographed by Ann Glaviano, Rebecca Allen, and Dewuan Frances. Britny Wainwright (Ceramics intern ’13) is showing work in the group exhibition The Beyond: Georgia O’Keeffe and Contemporary Art at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR. The show, which brings together 30 O’Keeffe paintings with the work of 20 emerging artists, runs through September 3.

West

Zoe Hawk (Studio Workspace resident ’16) has a solo show, Dreaming as the Summers Die, at Glass Rice, San Francisco, CA. Hurry—show closes June 2!

Jessica Dupuis (Chili Bowl Workspace resident ’10) and Phyllis Kudder Sullivan (Studio Workspace resident ’12) is showing work in the group exhibition Fahrenheit 2018 at the American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, CA. Show closes July 22.

Andrea Chung (Studio Grant Resident ’16) has a solo exhibition, You broke the ocean in half to be here, at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis, Davis, CA. Show runs June 30 – September 2.

Fay Ku (Studio Grant resident ’11) has a solo exhibition, No Place That Does Not See You, at the H Gallery, Paris, France. Show closes June 16.

Elisabeth S. Clark (Studio Grant resident ’12) has a solo show, I Never Knew That Sand Had So Many Colours, at Galerie Dohyang Lee, Paris, France. Show closes June 16.

Dani ReStack (Studio intern ’97, Artist’s Book Grant resident ’08) and Erin Woodbrey (Studio intern ’07) have their two-person exhibition Quill Isn’t Staying Now at Gaa Gallery Space, Cologne, Germany. Show closes June 30; check out gallery hours and address on Gaa Gallery’s website.

Ewelina Skowronska (Art-in-Ed Workspace resident ’17) is in the Shortlist 2018 online exhibition for the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize in London, UK through June 30.

Here are two must-see solo shows! Fay Ku’s (left) No Place That Does Not See You is at the H Gallery and Elisabeth S. Clark’s  I Never Knew That Sand Had So Many Colours is at Galerie Dohyang Lee. Find both in Paris, France before they close June 16!

Catrin Morgan (Artist’s Book Grant Resident ’17) has a solo exhibition, A Study, at the dalla Rosa Gallery, London, England. Stop by and maybe see the work behind her 2017 WSW-published artist’s book, Studies for Studies! Show runs through July 7.

Fay Ku (Studio Grant resident ’11) is showing work in the group exhibition Histories of Violence at Núcleo de Arte da Oliva Rua da Fundição, São João da Madeira, Portugal. Show runs through October 14; find more info here!

Elisabeth S. Clark (Studio Grant resident ’12) is showing work in the group exhibition Voices at Maison Max Ernst, Huismes, France. Show runs June 23 – November 5; find more info here!

Jackie Partridge (Studio Workspace resident ’18) will have work in the group exhibition, Hard Twist 13: Thread, at the Gladstone Hotel, Toronto, ON. Show runs August 16, 2018 – January 7, 2019; opening reception September 6, 7 – 10 pm.

Keep an Eye Out

College Book Arts Association’s upcoming exhibition, Rising Together, Zines, Artists’ Book and Prints with a Social Conscience, will be on the road through 2018 and 2021. You can find Kathy Hettinga’s (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’14) trade edition of 4 3 2 CRY (read about the handmade book here) in the line-up! Exhibitions at Mills College in conjunction with the San Francisco Center for the Book (CA), University of Iowa Center for the Book (IA), and the University of Utah are expected.
