Dear Friends and Supporters of WSW,

It is a great pleasure to be in touch with you today as I am absolutely thrilled and deeply honored to lead the Women’s Studio Workshop (WSW) as we celebrate its 50th year. WSW’s unwavering commitment to artists and its pioneering work in book arts, printmaking, photography, and ceramics is truly special. For the past five decades, WSW has consistently made space for creativity, inclusion, and artistic development—and this incredible journey would not have been possible without our founders and, of course, YOU!

In gratitude for your support and commitment to WSW, I invite you to join us in celebrating WSW’s 50th birthday on November 16th from 3-7pm. It promises to be a lively, joyous occasion, and we would love for you to be a part of this special milestone.

WSW’s success and survival are thanks to your generosity and commitment. We look forward to continuing this wonderful relationship with you as we embark on the next 50 years. Thank you for welcoming me into your vibrant community—I look forward to meeting you soon!

Next up from our first group of Fall artists-in-re

Next up from our first group of Fall artists-in-residence is Amoke Kubat, recipient of the McKnight Fellowship Residency, a partnership between Artist Communities Alliance (ACA)(@artistcommunitiesorg) and the McKnight Foundation. During her time at WSW, Amoke has been experimenting with screenprinting on textiles and learning different methods of book binding.

We are thrilled to have been able to provideAmoke with the resources and space to focus on her craft, and we can’t wait to see what she does next! While she is not on social media, you can follow up with Amoke’s work via her websites, amokekubat.org & yomamashouse.com.

Our first wave of Fall artists-in-residence are finishing their time at WSW this week, and we look forward to sharing what they’ve been up to!

Natalie Beall (@natalie_beall), Ora Schneider Regional Residency recipient, has been perfecting blowouts, pulp stencils, embossments, and inclusions with handmade paper over the past 3 weeks! Here’s a look at her time in the studio…

We are thrilled to have been able to provide Natalie with the resources and space to focus on her craft, and we can’t wait to see what she does next!

We want to wish a warm welcome (and a happy return) to our current group of interns! Julia Maisel-Berek (@julia.rmb) is joining us as our Nonprofit Management Intern and Gil Dickinson (@rathertendersubject) is joining us as our Studio Intern! We are also so lucky to have Celia Shaheen (@gothmomgothmom) staying on as our Assistant Studio Manager!

As part of the traveling exhibition A Radical Alte

As part of the traveling exhibition A Radical Alteration: Women’s Studio Workshop as a Model for Sustainable Art, curator Maymanah Farhat (@maymanah2.0) handpicked select artists’ books to be displayed with extended label text. The final book we will be sharing a closer look at is "Never Develop an Appetite and Other Poems of Love and Havoc" by Ana Fernandez (@mirandatexidorestudio)

Maymanah writes, “Based on a series of hand-drawn text and imagery, Fernandez’s silkscreened accordion book alternates between Spanish and English to describe various encounters with love and heartache. Complementing the artist’s playful drawings are poems that seem to have developed with an automatic writing technique, as memories and reflections are intertwined to describe specific experiences. The sparse design of each page, where texts and images appear suspended, adds to the sense that the book reflects a deeply personal space akin to a diary.

Fernandez, who was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute with a BFA in Painting and received an MFA in Painting and Drawing from California College of the Arts before pursuing a PhD from the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts in Maine. Fernandez traveled from Ecuador to produce this work during a Women’s Studio Workshop Artists’ Book Residency.”

We thank Maymanah for her extensive dedication to highlighting our organization’s work and the artists we serve by providing an in-depth look for some of the incredible artists’ books we have published over the years. The exhibition is currently on view at WSW’s Kingston NY campus!

Please join us for a reading and book release for Katie Anania’s (@thevillagecharlatan) "Out of Paper: Drawing, Environment, and the Body in 1960s America" (Yale University Press) (@yalebooks), co-sponsored by the Carolee Schneemann Foundation (@schneemannfoundation)

This reading and interactive talk by feminist art historian Katie Anania will trace several themes in eco-feminist art before 1970. To begin, Anania will explore how industrially produced paper is a tool and medium that connects the twentieth century with the present. By tracing some project prototypes from the Schneemann archive and in the Women’s Studio Workshop’s collection, a few questions will become possible: How has feminist art been instrumental in revealing the ways that different media forms participate in violent and toxic supply chains? What kinds of written, typed, and printed media tend to generate or consolidate historical narratives, and what leftovers and effluvia remain accessible only through time-based media or audio histories? And how might a feminist archival ethos help to recover and hold onto what is lost?

Copies of Anania’s book will be available for purchase on site. A reception and book signing will follow.

Women’s Studio Workshop was saddened to hear of

Women’s Studio Workshop was saddened to hear of the passing of Margaret Henkels, a former employee and critical influence in our early years as an organization. Margaret’s dedication to WSW allowed her to form a lasting legacy within our organization as she was the mother of our ceramics program and was our first marketing director, expanding the reach of our early newsletters.

Margaret will be greatly missed, but we are pleased to announce that her legacy will continue with a seed grant of $5,000 donated by WSW founders Ann Kalmbach and Tana Kellner, to support future ceramic artists-in-residence.
