New Faces at WSW: Spring 2019

This spring we welcome four new interns to the WSW studios: Carlie Waganer, Courtney Parbs, Perri Murray and Savannah Bustillo (who joins us later in April). Carlie will be working directly with WSW staff as the non-profit management intern while Courtney, Perri and Savannah will be studio interns working on projects with resident artists,while supporting the Studio Manager and Artistic Director.

Name: Carlie Waganer
Internship: Non-profit management Intern
School: Massachusetts College of Art and Design
Major/Minor: Fiber

Where’s your hometown(or place you call home)?
I grew up in Maryland but have moved around a lot along the East Coast.

Who are your top three favorite artists? Judy Pfaff, Ana Mendieta and Petah Coyne.

What art supplies did you bring with you to WSW? I brought my sewing machine, fabric scraps, yarn and paints. I often use my paints to sketch and make completed compositions with fabric.

What music do you like listening to while you are working?
Recently, I’ve really got into blues music, but also really love indie, folk and rock.

What are you most excited about  for at WSW? Do you have any specific projects planned?
I’m most excited to experience the community at WSW and to see how a women-centered non-profit functions.

What’s your favorite way to spend your weekend?
Exploring the outdoors, reading, finding new live music to listen to, and dreaming up new projects.

What’s your dream job?
My dream job would be to run my own artist’s retreat: or escape to the woods and raise sheep.

Name: Courtney Parbs
Internship: Studio Intern
School: Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD)
Major/Minor: Printmaking

Where’s your hometown(or place you call home)?
I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and this is the first time I’m away for an extended period of time. I am very excited to be in the Hudson Valley right now.

Who are your top three favorite artists?
Can I name five? The Sonnenzimmer collective out of Chicago, Utagawa Hiroshige, Issue Press out of Michigan, Du Good Press in New York and Norman Ackroyd.

What art supplies did you bring with you to WSW? I brought my typewriter, my sewing machine and a whole lot of paper.

What do you like listening to while you are working? My Fantasy Improv podcast, Hello from the Magic Tavern or the Dungeons and Dragons Podcast: “Adventure Zone.”

What are you most excited about  for at WSW? Do you have any specific projects planned?
I’m excited to learn different papermaking processes and to then make a book out of paper I’ve made.

What’s your favorite way to spend your weekend?
Reading graphic novels and taking trips to Target. The color palettes in a lot of my work is inspired by the graphic novel This one Summer.

What’s your dream job?
To be a printmaking studio manager or running my own print shop. To be a printmaking studio manager or running my own print shop.

Name: Perri Murray

School: Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia 
Major/Minor: Printmaking 

Where’s your hometown(or place you call home)?
I was born in Pittsburgh and was based in Philadelphia before coming here.

Who are your top three favorite artists?
Hélio Oiticica, Ellsworth Kelly and David Hockney.

What art supplies did you bring with you to WSW?
I brought a bunch of ink, brushes, markers, pens and scrap paper for brainstorming new ideas.

What music do you like listening to while you are working?
Fleetwood Mac, Mariah Carey and Noname.

What are you most excited about  for at WSW? Do you have any specific projects planned?
I am looking forward to meeting so many new artists! I am also currently planning a suite of prints.

What’s your favorite way to spend your weekend?
Cooking – I’m a fan of preparing breakfast food and catching up on TV shows: some of my favorites are the Sopranos and Jane the Virgin.

What’s your dream job?
I would like to be a Studio Technician or a ceramicist. I like the idea of being able to live off of making functional ceramics.

Name: Savannah Bustillo
Internship: Studio Intern 
School: Washington University, St. Louis
Major/Minor: Studio Art and Anthropology

Where’s your hometown(or place you call home)?
Albuquerque, New Mexico

Who are your top three favorite artists?
Luis Camnitzer, Doris Salcedo, Cy Twombly

What art supplies are you bringing with you to WSW?
A little bit of paper for printing and making books, some basic bookmaking supplies

What music do you like listening to while you are working?
Almost anything but especially indie rock or folk – Tracy Chapman or Foals especially!

What are you most excited about for at WSW? Do you have any specific projects planned?
I’m so excited to just be working back in studio and everything that entails — assisting other artists, working on my own stuff, even cleaning the presses! I think being in the studio is such a magical space regardless of what you’re doing.

What’s your favorite way to spend your weekend?
Armed with a big pot of tea, my favorite weekends are a mix of being outside reading and spending a long night in the studio. Throw in communal cooking for extra points!

What’s your dream job?
I would love to teach printmaking at a university level, while also running a print shop that does collaborations with artists and where I can also make my own work. Who says you can’t have it all?
