#FirstFriday: March Exhibitions We Love

Highlighting exhibitions that feature the work of WSW artists, we share the shows, near and far, that make up our monthly must-see list.

New York

Lynn Batchelder (Ora Schneider Grant resident ’16) has a solo exhibition Nonlinear: New Works by Lynn Batchelder at The Gallery at Reinstein|Ross, NYC. Featuring works made during her WSW residency, the show runs from March 16 – April 28; opening reception March 16, 6 – 8 pm.

Zarina Hashmi (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’91) is featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition Workshop and Legacy alongside Stanley William Hayter and Krishna Reddy. Show closes March 26.

Rachel Frank (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’10) has the solo exhibition Rachel Frank: Past Future Tense at the Field Projects Gallery, NYC. Hurry—show closes March 6!

Jill Parisi (Studio Grant resident ’04) is showing work with Alexandra Davis in Celestial Terrestrial at the Martin-Mullen Art Gallery, Oneonta, NY.  Hurry—show closes March 17!

Hilary North (Studio Workspace Residency ’02) has the solo exhibition An Elephant Diary at Manhattan Graphics Center, NYC. Show closes March 20; reception March 18, 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

Jen Schwarting (Studio intern ’00) is showing work in Body/Head, a pop-up show of women artists addressing the female figure in a post-election society, at the Field Projects Gallery, NYC. Show closes March 25.

Shanti Grumbine (Ora Schneider Regional Grant resident ’15) is showing work in the group exhibition Disarming Geometries at the Dorsky Gallery, Long Island City, NY. Show closes March 26.

Rejin Leys (Studio intern ’89) is showing work in Art in Flux Presents FEEGZ Selects, Harlem, NY. Show closes March 31.

Cheyenne Mallo (Studio intern ’11) is showing work in Form and Function at the Mid Hudson Heritage Center, Poughkeepsie, NY. Show runs through March; opening reception March 3, 5 – 7 pm.

Allora McCullough is showing work a The Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA and The Shirt Factory Gallery, Glen Falls, NY.

Allora McCullough (Ceramics intern ’16) is showing one of her ceramic Guardian Figures in the exhibition Small Works 2017 at The Shirt Factory Gallery, Glen Falls, NY. Show closes March 22. More of Allora’s Guardian Figures are on view in WSW’s own Gallery Under the Stairs!

Anne-Marie Lavigne (Legacy Studio Grant resident ’16) is showing work from her WSW residency in the International Print Center New York’s Idols and Impossible Structures: New Prints 2017/Winter. Show runs through April 1.

Chris Petrone (Studio intern ’04) and Heidi Neilson’s (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’06, ’10) artist book, Uniform Paper, is on view in Pulp as Portal: Socially Engaged Hand Papermaking at The Center for Book Arts, NYC. Show runs through April 8.

Emily Puthoff (Ora Schneider Grant resident ’11), Lynn Batchelder (Ora Schneider Grant resident ‘16), and Jill Parisi (Studio Grant resident ‘04) are showing work in Intimately Unfamiliar: New Work By Suny New Paltz Art Faculty at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, New Paltz, NY. Show runs through April 9.

Shanti Grumbine (Ora Schneider Regional Grant resident ’15) has a solo exhibition, Zeroing, featuring prints she made during her WSW residency at Smack Mellon, Brooklyn, NY. Show runs March 11 – April 23; opening reception March 11, 5 – 8 pm.

Shanti Grumbine (Ora Schneider Regional Grant resident ’15) is showing work in History of the Present at the OSilas Gallery, Concordia College, Bronxville, NY. Show runs March 16 – April 23; opening reception March 16, 7 pm.

Northeast 

Jennifer Davies (Studio Workspace resident ’03) has a solo exhibition Paper is a Path: New Work in Handmade Paper at City Gallery, New Haven, CT. Show closes March 26; opening reception March 5, 2 – 5 pm and artist’s talk March 26, 2 pm.

Marianne Dages (Beisinghoff resident ’16) is showing work in the group exhibition Polaris at the Michener Art Museum, Doylestown, PA. Show runs through April 23.

Allora McCullough (Ceramics intern ’16) is showing work in Small Favors: Think Inside the Box at The Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA. Show runs through May 27.

Midwest

Britny Wainwright (Ceramics intern ’13) is showing her master’s thesis at The Ohio State University Urban Arts Space, Columbus, OH in Thesis: Department of Art Third-Year MFA Exhibition. Show closes March 18; reception March 4, 5 – 7 pm.

Anna Tararova (Art-in-Ed Workspace resident ’15) is showing work in The Galleries at Cleveland State University at 1307 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH. Show runs March 10 – April 15; opening reception March 10, 5 – 8 pm.

Anna Tararova (Art-in-Ed Workspace resident ’15) is organizing a juried exhibition, American Fiber, at the Morgan Conservatory, Cleveland, OH. Final call for entries is March 10; find more info here!

Irene Chan (Studio intern ’96, Art-in-Ed Artist’s Book Grant resident ’98) is showing work in Of Color: Race & Identity in Artist’ Books at the Clark Humanities Museum, Scripps College, Claremont, CA. Show runs March 6 – April 7.

Sarah Comfort (Studio Workspace Resident ’16) is showing work in the exhibition Shifting Landscapes at Form and Concept Gallery, Santa Fe, NM. Show runs through May 20.

Ellen Sollod (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’90) is showing work in Into the Deep, an exhibition featuring the work of sixteen artists at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA. Over 55 artworks will illustrate the visual similarities between glass and water. Show runs through September 2017.

South

Jennifer Grimyser (Artist Fellowship ’07, Artist’s Book Grant resident ’08) has a solo exhibition, “”Air Quotes, at Guest Spot, Baltimore, MD. Show runs March 11 – April 15; opening reception March 11, 7 – 10 pm.

Irene Chan (Studio intern ’96, Art-in-Ed Artist’s Book Grant resident ’98) is showing an installation, Bleeding Heart Flowers, honoring women printmakers in Prints in the Park at Hurt Garden, Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA for the Southern Graphics Council Conference. See it Friday, March 17, 11 am – 4 pm!

Jessica Dupuis (Chili Bowl Workspace resident ’10) is showing work in Holding On: Jessica Dupuis, Karen Hillier, & Sarah Malakoff at Artspace, Raleigh, NC. Show runs through April 15.

Ann Marie Kennedy (Studio intern ’92, Artist’s Book Grant resident ’98) is showing work in Sense of Place at the Waterworks Visual Arts Center, Salisbury, NC. Show runs through May 20.

International

Emily Speed (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’07, Public Art Grant resident ’15) has a solo exhibition, Emily Speed: Body Builders, at Exeter Phoenix, Exeter, UK. The exhibition includes the first UK screening of her 2016 video, Body Builders, commissioned by Forth Worth Contemporary Art, Texas. Hurry—show closes March 4!

Leslie Nichols (Studio Grant resident ’15) is showing work in New Impressions, a traveling exhibition of letterpress prints, at The New England Regional Art Museum, Armidale, Australia. Show runs through April 20.
