The Book Art Dummy – Alisa Banks
Dates: August 22 – 26, 2022
Studio: Silkscreen
Tuition: Sliding Scale $300 – $1200
Lab fee: $90
Class limit: 8
This workshop will focus on the development of original content to create a dummy for a book arts project. A dummy is a mockup or model of a book and is created when a significant portion of the project has been resolved. The dummy functions as a general model for the final project.
The first session will consist of writing exercises, brainstorming, and project selection. Subsequent sessions will focus on honing content, planning, auditioning, and project budgeting. Dimensional possibilities will be explored, using planned and improvisational approaches, discussions, and individual and group feedback.
At the end of this workshop, participants can expect to have identified a project and completed a rough dummy of their book in addition to personal notes containing next steps, writings, and ideas for future works.
Artist
Alisa Banks
Alisa Banks investigates connections to contemporary culture, her Creole heritage, and the African diaspora through the lenses of home, terrain, and the body, using Southern Louisiana as a point of entry. Her sculptural artist books, writings, and textile collages, which incorporate fibers and found materials, reference traditional craft forms through twisting, knotting, crocheting, and sewing. Alisa’s interests include exploring alternative modes of reading and the performative potential of the book. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, Europe, Asia, Africa, and throughout the US, and is housed in several private and public collections, including the Smithsonian Institution, the US Library of Congress, and the New York Public Library.
