Plant, Pigment, Papers – Erina Schultz
Dates: July 27 – 31, 2026
Studio: Silkscreen
Tuition: Sliding Scale, $450 – $1300
Lab fee: $150
Class limit: 8
Working with the traditional Japanese process of Katazome-shi, we will be making and printing rice paste resist on paper. The class will explore painting with natural pigments using a soy binder and talk about the difference between earth and plant pigments. Participants will also learn to make their own natural pigments through the process of laking, which is the process of turning a soluble dye into an insoluble pigment.
Please note we will be working small to give time to go through the entire process.
This workshop takes place in our silkscreen studio located on the second floor, up a flight of stairs. There will be some periods of prolonged standing.
This workshop is currently in the week-long members-only registration period. Registration will open to the public on February 4th.
Artist
Erina Schultz
Growing up along the shores of Florida, Erina developed an early connection to nature that continues to shape her artistic practice today in the Hudson Valley. Her studio practice centers around cut-stencil printing and natural pigments, drawing on traditional Japanese katazome techniques to inform her process. By incorporating natural materials directly into her work, she explores the interplay between environment and art, bringing elements of the outdoors into the studio. Erina earned her BFA with a concentration in printmaking from Appalachian State University and continues to study art through workshops and her art community.
