Immerse yourself in the incredible world of halftones! The halftone process translates continuous shades and tones into patterns of dots, allowing screenprinters to create a rich stencil from a photograph or any 2D image. We will start the week with single color prints and move through the four layer CMYK process.
Demos will include creating halftones and color separations in Photoshop, mixing ink, and registering our print layers with pins and tabs. We will discuss how to choose dot size, mesh count, squeegee firmness, and ink transparency, and examine how these tools can be used to convey the meaning of our work. We will also leave space for experimentation, happy accidents, and unintended outcomes. Explorations will include making direct alterations to films with scissors and paint markers as well as using hands-on paper stencils to block and fill areas of the paper. Prior familiarity with screenprinting fundamentals is recommended, including comfort coating and exposing photo-emulsion, and the ability to screenprint on paper with consistent results.
In order to reserve your space in the class, we require a $250 nonrefundable deposit. WSW offers a sliding tuition model for the Summer Art Institute, and you can pick your desired tuition level from the drop-down menu at check-out. For assistance in selecting your tuition level, see this guide. If you are in a position to pay full tuition or more, we request that you do so. The pay-as-you-can model is not based on tax returns or documentation, rather your self-determined capacity to pay. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here.
