From Pulp to Print: Hybrid Techniques in Papermaking – Gretchen Schermerhorn
Dates: August 3 – 7, 2026
Studio: Papermaking
Tuition: Sliding Scale, $450 – $1300
Lab fee: $150
Class limit: 6
Explore an interdisciplinary process that fuses papermaking and print through stencil techniques and screenprinting with colored pulp. Shifting between studios, you’ll work with pulp as a structural and image-bearing material, using it to build surfaces, embed color, and generate layered compositions.
We’ll begin with pulp preparation, including beating specifications, sheet formation, and producing pulp that mimics the qualities of ink. Participants will learn high- and low-tech stencil methods, including exposing images onto screens and printing directly into freshly formed sheets. Using vacuum tables and deckle boxes, we’ll build depth, experiment with excavating color and imagery, and explore pulp transfers, layered blowouts, and the incorporation of varied fibers.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll gain the technical foundation to develop your own pulp printing practice or expand your existing skills.
This workshop will occasionally visit the silkscreen studio located on the second floor, up a flight of stairs. Papermaking is a wet process; participants should be prepared with waterproof or water-safe shoes and clothing. This workshop will involve prolonged periods of standing, often requiring repeated movements in the upper body, and the maneuvering of heavy items.
