This course acquaints students with a wide range of screen-printing techniques and approaches using a variety of water-based inks and experimental materials. Participants will discover the medium’s flexibility, exploring the inherent cross-connections and expressive possibilities of photomechanical, screen stencil, monotype, and digital processes.
Printmaking is a unique way to make images and to think about the construction of images. It emphasizes thinking in layers and processes that value indirect and highly mediated production. This course will focus on the history of screen-printing, as well as contemporary and non-traditional methods and techniques; such as monotypes, mono-printing, collage, and mixed media. Participants will gain an understanding of ink options and color mixing, and the different ways hand-drawn and photomechanical films can be made, while exploring the versatility of screen-printing and working with substrates other than paper.
