This workshop will give students an opportunity to fully explore the dimensional possibilities of paper pulp – without having to pull sheets. Experimentation will be encouraged as a way to understand and appreciate the inherent fragility, strength, texture and skin-like properties of abaca and cotton pulp. Demonstrations and discussions on contemporary paper artists will be incorporated as well as how to continue working with pulp in your own studio, without expensive tools or equipment. In the studio we will explore materials and strategies of making simple armatures out of wire, reed and found objects as a basis for dipping and casting. Surface design and assemblage techniques will be utilized to create sculptural forms that are figurative, abstract, and at times wonderfully unpredictable.
