Contemporary and Experimental Marbling – Maisie Broome
Dates: August 18 – August 22, 2025
Studio: Papermaking
Tuition: Sliding Scale, $450 – $1300
Lab Fee: $150
Class limit: 10
Take a playful and contemporary approach to the ancient technique of marbling! Participants will explore the vast potential of marbling and experiment with materials while familiarizing themselves with the process’s unique relationships to movement, imagery, and scale. The workshop will give participants the technical knowledge for making a marbling bath, preparing materials, and applying paint to the bath’s surface. We will print on a variety of materials, including (but not limited to) fabric and paper. Responding intuitively to our materials, we will learn how to manipulate the floating paints to create pattern and imagery, and the week will culminate in printing collectively on a large scale. Participants will leave with the foundational knowledge needed to continue marbling at home and a variety of marbled materials to utilize in their practice.
In order to reserve your space in the class, we require a $250 nonrefundable deposit. WSW offers a sliding tuition model for the Summer Art Institute, and you can pick your desired tuition level from the drop-down menu at check-out. For assistance in selecting your tuition level, see this guide. If you are in a position to pay full tuition or more, we request that you do so. Artist
Maisie Broome
Maisie Myfawnwy Broome is an artist and designer who lives and works in Queens, NYC. Originally from rural Maine, she holds a BFA in sculpture from the Maine College of Art. Marbling for over a decade, Maisie designs and creates collections of clothing and objects for the home through her eponymous brand Myfawnwy. Maisie’s practice pushes the applications of marbling through sculpture, works on paper, and video while exploring themes of transformation, emotion, magic, and play. She draws inspiration from the natural world and the human experience, of which the imperfect, fluid characteristics of marbling lend themselves to illustrating.
