Summer Art Institute
The Summer Art Institute (SAI) at Women’s Studio Workshop is a time for you to focus on your work, become energized and inspired, learn new skills, and meet a new community of like-minded artists.
Your teachers are leaders in the field, have extraordinary skill and a passion to share their knowledge of new materials and methods. Our goal is to offer you an opportunity to hone your abilities and have a transformative art experience.
Whether at our studios in the heart of the Hudson Valley or at artisan studios in Oaxaca, Mexico, our community of artists inspire intensive art making. SAI classes are kept small so you can work comfortably and have a productive experience.
Collaboration has become a vital part of our program as we intertwine encaustic, and papermaking with the cooperation of our friends at R&F Handmade Paints, the finest manufacturer of oil sticks and encaustics in the US.
What to Expect:
We’ll begin the week with an optional meet & greet dinner hosted on-site in WSW’s new community and event space. Class participants can join us for dinner and drinks to meet their fellow artists and familiarize themselves with the studios.
On Monday, students can check in as early as 8:30 am and classes start each day at 9 am. We break for a catered vegetarian lunch at 12:30 pm and return to the studios until class ends at 4 pm. Participants are welcome to work before and after class during open studio hours, 7 am – 11 pm. Classes end at 3 pm on Friday.
Each Monday, WSW hosts a dinner onsite at 5 pm, followed by artist presentations from each instructor at 5:30 pm. This is a great way to hear about your instructor’s work and learn about what’s happening in the other workshops running that week.
On Thursday, starting at 5pm we’ll have wine and snacks available and we’ll open up the studios so that instructors and participants have the opportunity to chat with colleagues about works-in-progress and see what’s being made in other workshops. This is a casual event designed to stimulate conversation and excitement around the incredible artists and artwork in the studios!
WSW does not discriminate on any basis for our educational programming or membership. Participants with special needs are encouraged to contact the Workshop in advance so we can ensure adequate access to our studios and equipment.
Workshop Tuition and Fees:
Tuition and lab fees are indicated with each class listing. WSW members will receive a discount. Not a member? Join WSW now! (Membership discounts and scholarships are not available for our workshops in Europe; scholarships are not applicable toward workshops with R&F Handmade Paints.)
Each workshop held at WSW costs $775 for members or $825 for non-members. WSW memberships are annual and provide many benefits, including exclusive tuition discounts studio rental rates. Please note that membership discounts are not available for collaborative workshops with R&F Handmade Paints or international workshops.
Lab fees vary according to the needs of each instructor and the cost of special materials, inks, etc. After a comprehensive review, we have raised lab fees for our 2020 courses in order to keep our studios clean and efficient. Lab fees cover the cost of provided materials for each class in addition to rags, newsprint, solvents, and cleaning agents.
A non-refundable deposit of $300 is required to reserve your space. Full tuition payment is due one month prior to the start of the workshop. If you register within one month of the class start date, we ask that you pay in full at the time of registration.
Accommodation and Transportation:
WSW cannot provide housing for class participants. There are, however, plenty of options in the surrounding area. You’ll receive our curated housing list as an attachment to your Registration Confirmation email. This list includes Airbnb locations, Bed & Breakfasts, motels/hotels, and rooms in private homes. All workshops have limited enrollment; early registration is recommended!
You may register for SAI online or by calling us at (845) 658-9133. Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email and receipt of payment.
Your deposit will secure your spot in the class until the tuition due date. Any remaining tuition or lab fees are due in full one month prior to your workshop. WSW will email payment reminders before the due date. If your full balance is not received one month prior to your workshop, you may lose your spot in the class.
Once a class is full, we begin a waitlist. If a space becomes available, we contact those on the waitlist in the order that registration was received. WSW does not require a deposit for the waitlist.
Scholarship awards are based on financial need and are available to a limited number of artists. WSW can only provide one award per applicant. Scholarships are not applicable for joint workshops with R&F Handmade Paints or international workshops.
If awarded, artists receive a 50% reduction in the cost of tuition, but must pay the lab fee in full. This means that scholarship recipients with WSW membership pay $387.50 + the full lab fee and nonmembers pay $412.50 + the full lab fee.
In addition to filling out the following form, applicants must include:
- Your most recent tax return
- A list of your formal and informal art education experience
- A description of how this award will benefit your art-making
Applications are due May 15, 2020, midnight EST and applicants will be notified either way by June 15, 2020.
Cancellation and Workshop Fees:
The $300 deposit for classes is non-refundable regardless of when cancellation occurs. The following refund policy helps to eliminate last-minute workshop cancellations due to under-enrollment:
- If you cancel 30 days or more prior to the class start date, then tuition and lab fee will be returned, minus the non-refundable $300 deposit.
- If you cancel 15-29 days prior to the class start date, then 50% of tuition and lab fee will be returned, minus the non-refundable $300 deposit.
- If you cancel 14 days or fewer prior to the class start date, neither tuition, lab fee, nor deposit will be returned.
If WSW has to cancel a class for any reason, deposit and tuition will be refunded in full, or can be transferred to another workshop. Classes need a minimum of four participants to run. If possible, participants will be given four week’s notice if a class has been cancelled due to under-enrollment. WSW is not responsible for non-refundable travel or housing costs incurred by students
