WSW is pleased to invite you to celebrate how arti WSW is pleased to invite you to celebrate how artists have changed America through direct action with a reading and interactive talk to celebrate the release of Lauren O’Neill-Butler’s @loneillbutler “The War of Art: A History of Artists’ Protest In America” (2025, @versobooks).

Brenda Miller, a Kingston-based artist who contributed to the book, will discuss the activist group “the Ad Hoc Women Artists’ Committee,” which she formed in 1970 with Lucy Lippard, Faith Ringgold, and Poppy Johnson. The event will also include a reading by O’Neill-Butler from the book, a Q&A, and a book signing. Learn more about the event on our website!

Join us on July 26th from 4 to 6PM in the front room. Postmark @postmarkbooksny will be onsite selling copies of the book. This event is free and open to the public, but we encourage you to reserve a spot. Link in bio.
Alex Callender @alexiscallender (Artist’s Book R Alex Callender @alexiscallender (Artist’s Book Residency Grant) has spent the past 6(?) weeks printing for her upcoming artist’s book “History Constructs the House that Sometimes Holds Us.” While in residency, Alex worked in our silkscreen studio and with our risograph printer to translate her drawings and archival research into printed material. She also used our Chandler and Price letterpress printer to include die cut elements to her book. Let’s take a sneak peek at production!

“History Constructs the House that Sometimes Holds Us,” is made in memory to those who experienced the evictions and community displacement of Urban Renewal’s removal and relocation process that disproportionately affected Black, Puerto Rican, and working poor neighborhoods. The book includes a collection of text, drawings, and images woven together from various records of tenant-based organizations in New Haven, CT, and New York City during the mid-century urban renewal programs.
Meet the Chef! Lexa Walsh @lexawalshstudios will b Meet the Chef! Lexa Walsh @lexawalshstudios will be joining us as our Summer Art Institute chef!

Lexa Walsh is chef and artist who specializes in nourishing fellow creatives at retreats, residencies, and film sets, as well as creating special parties. World travels, farmer’s market bounty and an exuberant spirit have influenced her cooking. In her socially engaged art practice, she often incorporates food and radical hospitality as a way to bring people to the table, where she believes anything can be accomplished. She recently relocated from the SF Bay Area to the Hudson Valley.

To enjoy her tasty dishes, you can register for our buffet-style meal plan which includes five locally-sourced, home cooked lunches and one dinner with a glass of wine for $155. You must register at least one week before your SAI workshop begins. Link in bio. You may also join us for Slide Night on 8/18 to learn more about her artistic practice!

During this period, WSW hosted many programs with feminist artists at local businesses and spaces supported by the local community, which created the foundation for our ongoing legacy.
