2 days until the opening reception of “Overwinte 2 days until the opening reception of “Overwintering,” a group exhibition of works on, of, and off paper by Gil Dickinson, Julia Maisel-Berick, and Celia Shaheen. We’d love to have you join us in the gallery as we celebrate WSW’s wonderful interns Friday at 6PM! ------- An exhibition of works on, of, and off paper, “Overwintering” is the culmination of work produced by Studio Intern Gil Dickinson, Nonprofit Management Intern Julia Maisel-Berick, and Assistant Studio Manager Celia Shaheen while living and working at Women’s Studio Workshop. Hailing from far warmer corners of the country–Florida, California, and Texas–these artists took inspiration from steadfast creatures that use practices of “overwintering” such as hibernation and migration to survive cold, icy conditions. Bonding over stoves full of soup, freezing pipes, and shoveling snow, “Overwintering” is a celebration of trips to the thrift store before dark, of piling under blankets during a movie, of dinners, and making a home together. Through studies and meditations on local wildlife, domestic spaces, collecting, and reliquaries, the three distinct bodies of work in “Overwintering” hold the stillness and pensiveness of winter alongside the light and energy of a new spring.

As we prepare for this year’s event, we held a staff bowl decorating party :) We’re so excited to see you on April 5th and have some Chili Bowl Fest fun together! Join us for live music all day from @LibraryBand, enjoy a FREE serving of chili with each bowl purchase, and don’t worry, we didn’t forget about the kids! We’ll have a face paint & temporary tattoo station as well. Come by WSW’s campus and check out our selection of over 500 beautiful hand-crafted bowls available for purchase ranging in shape, size, color, decoration, and price-point. All of the proceeds of the sale support WSW’s artistic programming! 2-4PM: Early admission $10 *Kids get in for free!* 4-7PM: Free! Can’t make the sale, but still want to support WSW’s artistic programming? Check out our online sale! We’ll have just under 100 bowls for sale online starting at 10AM EST on April 5th. Join us in the gallery Friday night (3/21 @ 6PM) to celebrate our incredible interns and assistant studio manager as we approach the end of their stay at WSW. Meet featured artist Celia Shaheen (@gothmomgothmom), WSW’s assistant studio manager! Celia Shaheen (she/her) is an artist and craftsperson from North Texas. In 2020, Celia graduated with a BFA in Studio Art, a BA in Honors Art History, and a museum studies certificate from the University of Texas at Austin. Celia’s studio practice oscillates at the intersection of archiving and making, using materials across the spectrum of textiles, printmaking, papermaking, and metals to investigate the shared language of textiles and storytelling, Lebanese culinary traditions, folklores of the animate and inanimate, and webs of lineage and longing. Welcome current artist-in-residence Ashley Page (@ Welcome current artist-in-residence Ashley Page (@ashleypage.studio), studio residency grant recipient! Ashley Page is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Portland, ME. Originally hailing from Minneapolis, MN, Page considers her studio practice and curatorial projects to be a vessel for representation, intergenerational exchange, and creative expression. Having obtained her BFA in Sculpture and a minor in Public Engagement from Maine College of Art & Design, her artistic framework is a vehicle for storytelling. In 2022, she was awarded the Amelia Peabody Award for Sculpture by St. Botolph Club Foundation, and has taught workshops at Waterfall Arts, Peters Valley, the University of Maine Orono and more. Her curatorial and studio practice has been seen in the Portland Museum of Art, Hunterdon Art Museum, Congress Square Park, the Center for Afrofuturist Studies, The Abyssinian Meeting House, Cove Street Arts, and others. Page is presently the Studio and Programs Manager at Indigo Arts Alliance (@indigoartsalliance), where she works within the intersection of art and activism. During her time at WSW, Ashley plans to focus on pulp painting, stencils, blowouts, and laminations, as well as exploring relief printing and enjoying the Hudson Valley spring sun while creating cyanotypes. We’re delighted to have her here and look forward to seeing what she creates!

WSW is proud to announce we have a new member on o WSW is proud to announce we have a new member on our team… welcome (back) Steph Moss! Steph interned at WSW in 2011, and has now joined the team as our Studio Coordinator, focusing her time and experience on supporting facility operations and assisting artists. We’re so excited to have her on the team!

As we approach the opening, we’ll be featuring a piece by each artist… meet Julia Maisel-Berick (@julia.rmb)! Born and raised in Los Angeles, Julia Maisel-Berick is a multi-media artist currently based in the Hudson Valley. Utilizing paper scraps, paint, fabric and glue, Julia crafts images inspired by medical advertisements, Victorian scrap-book homes, and the communal culture of quilting. Second-hand or repurposed materials often guide her compositions, and she is interested in emphasizing the uncanny nature of the mid-century lifestyle magazines collected from antique malls, neighbors, and street corners over the years. While at WSW, Julia’s work has expanded to include processes in print and papermaking as she finds new ways to piece textiles, found images, text, and paintings together.
