How are books represented in our culture as objects of idealogical values? What does this mean to us? The author examines values that books have inherited and when and how they have held up through changes in our culture. Images illustrate the use of books in pubic spaces–as sanctuary, in paintings, and as elements of architectural inlay. The text consists of quotations that are telling evidence of the roles that books play in our society.
