Fall is quickly approaching, and with that comes t Fall is quickly approaching, and with that comes the return of Meet & Make craft nights! To kick off the season, we’re thrilled to bring back Mend with a Friend on September 14th. 🧵🪡👕👖✂️💫

Please RSVP if you plan on attending. This will help us best prepare the amount of supplies and snacks to provide for the event.

-

Meet & Make at WSW is a time to gather in community and dedicate time to making together. Bring a friend or make some new ones while attending! Meetings are once a month on Mondays between 6PM to 8PM, drop in or stay awhile.

Materials, snacks, and refreshments will be provided, no experience needed, and skillshare is encouraged!

Our mission with Meet & Make is to create a safe, fun “third space,” and make crafting accessible to all! Meet & Make nights fully fund themselves, meaning all donations we receive go directly back into the program.

WSW cofounder Ann Kalmbach @annkalmbach is here to WSW cofounder Ann Kalmbach @annkalmbach is here to tell you a little more about the Tower of Babel that has popped up outside our campus. You can spot the others next to the Rail Trail, the Rosendale Library @rosendalelibrary, O+ @opositivefest, and a secret fifth location👀 Keep your eyes peeled around Kingston and Rosendale over the next few weeks to spot it!

Accompanying each tower is a sign that reads:

“The US government has banned over 250 words that are no longer acceptable to use in federal documents. KaKeART, Ann Kalmback @annkalmbach & Tatana Kellner @tatana1950, believe these words are essential to appreciate and enjoy our human diversity and uniquely American culture.

We have constructed, with the structural engineering help from Robert Woodruff, and administrative support from the Rosendale Library, 5 towers of Babel displayed throughout our community. Each tower has 50 words randomly selected from Pen America’s evolving list.

This project is also made possible in part with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.”

This year we aim to shine a light on the enduring and trailblazing work of Sara Pasti @sara_pasti, Kingston Ward 1 Councilwoman, former Director of the Samuel Dorsky Museum, and Vice Chair of the Ulster County Arts & Culture Advisory Council.

Join us in honoring Sara with a celebratory evening of gourmet food by artist and chef Lexa Walsh @lexawalshstudios, wine courtesy of Boulevard Wine & Spirits @boulevardwines, music, and a silent auction of ceramic candleholders, lamps, and more by artists from our community.

Let’s take a moment to meet the artists of our upc Let’s take a moment to meet the artists of our upcoming exhibition, “Inventory,” featuring work by WSW’s Studio Interns Ruth Marks @rruffie, Daniella Porras @_daniella_porras_, and Heidi Tejeda Mata @tt.dey. Join us for the opening reception this Friday!

Heidi D. Tejeda Mata is a printmaker from Southern California. Her work documents her life as a young second-generation Mexican-American woman, drawing from cherished yet troubled memories surrounding adolescence and her relationship to womanhood, family, her ethnic home, and food. She joins fragments to create narratives that speak to the perseverance of Mexican immigrant families, underscoring and affirming that value, beauty, and joy are inherently present in otherwise marginalized existences. Her work takes on a modest, delicate appearance with a bittersweet undertone. Through a juxtaposition of loose and rigid mark-making and forms, the use of both warm and cool colors, and consideration of the printed material, she both softens and sharpens the impact of the real stories of personal, socioeconomic, and cultural struggle that shape each image.

Mark your calendars for the opening reception on August 28th!

Daniella Porras-Sholes is a multidisciplinary artist who creates sculptures and prints exploring her need to desperately hold onto memories and spaces before they inevitably vanish. By using handmade overbeaten paper to print on while it is wet or to cast over found objects, she attempts to capture a moment using materials that repel the very act of control. The paper decides what details get carried into the final piece, making her confront her own inability to keep something the same. Paper holds memory, but it is malleable, echoing how humans remember. This uncontrollable process of papermaking distorts, shrivels and pulls away, mimicking in a physical form how fickle memory is. By taking objects or photos from her own environment, she creates site-specific work, painstakingly adhering the paper to an object that attempts to do what will never be possible: replicate a moment in time.
