And just like that the first week of Summer Art In And just like that the first week of Summer Art Institute workshops has come to an end! We kicked off SAI with “Remixing the Archive: Manipulating Digitized Images for Risograph” with @corinneteed, and “Material Memory: Texture Techniques in Papermaking” with SR Lejeune. Corinne’s students explored our archive with WSW archivist @faythelevine to find inspiration for their projects, and both groups wrapped up with final critiques. Thanks everyone for a great first week!

Our new archive capsule exhibition “We Have Move Our new archive capsule exhibition “We Have Moved Neutrality: Looking back at WSW’s Big Brother is Watching” is now on view upstairs through fall 2025. The concept for 1984: Big Brother Is Watching, 5 Women’s Art Organizations Make Artcrime, an Orwellian-inspired photocopy exhibition, was born out of creative motivation to secure a new Xerox machine for the office, paired with“the desire for communication with other women’s art organizations.” WSW invited four like-minded feminist art spaces; Women’s Art Registry, Minneapolis, MN, Women’s Graphic Center, Los Angeles, CA, Local 1734 Art Collective, Washington, DC, and Feminist Art Institute, New York, NY,  to create artwork that could be reproduced as multiples on a photocopier, with the intention of the exhibition traveling nationwide over the year. Visit us and learn more about the innovative and radical exhibition. You can even purchase original, limited copies of recently unearthed deadstock exhibition catalogs. Hot tip: these will also be available at the upcoming book fair @cpw_Kingston in August for $48.00

The National Museum of Women in the Arts @womenint The National Museum of Women in the Arts @womeninthearts will be hosting a Virtual Educator Summer Camp led by participating artists from “A Radical Alteration” at the end of July! 

There will be 1.5-hour sessions daily, Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. Sessions, inspired by the Art, Books, and Creativity (ABC) Institutes and NMWA’s collection, are hands-on, participatory, and fun. Sessions will explore NMWA’s collection and resources, introduce historical and contemporary women artists, and engage participants in experimental making and close looking. Last week, WSW welcomed artist @emilylarned into o Last week, WSW welcomed artist @emilylarned into our archives, where she spent time with the print, ephemera, and newsletter collections in preparation for her on-site October exhibition and a new publication through her press.
Join us on July 26th to celebrate how artists have Join us on July 26th to celebrate how artists have changed America through direct action with the release of Lauren O’Neill-Butler’s @loneillbutler latest publication “The War of Art: A History of Artist’s Protest in America” (2025, @versobooks). 

The afternoon will include a reading by O’Neill-Butler from the book, an interactive talk led by Brenda Miller, a Kingston-based artist who contributed to the book, a Q&A, and a book signing. @Postmarkbooksny will also be onsite selling copies of the book. This event is free and open to the public, but we encourage you to reserve a spot. Link in bio.

Meet the speakers!
Lauren O’Neill-Butler is a New York-based writer and editor. Her books include “The War of Art: A History of Artists’ Protest in America” (Verso, 2025) and “Let’s Have a Talk: Conversations with Women on Art and Culture” (Karma, 2021). She has written for Aperture, Art Journal, Bookforum, and The New York Times, among many others, and has also contributed essays to many exhibition catalogues. She received a Warhol Foundation Art Writers Grant in 2020 and the Beverley Art Writers Travel Grant in 2023.

Brenda Miller (b. 1941, Bronx, NY) is known for her innovative sisal wall sculptures, typewriting, and Alphabet rubber-stamped ink and pencil works. She has exhibited work at prominent institutions like the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art. As a feminist and active participant in the 1970s women’s movement, Miller co-founded the Ad-Hoc Women Artists Committee with notable figures like Faith Ringgold and Lucy Lippard. Her early work merges gender politics with post-minimalism, using repurposed materials like sisal and rubber stamps to imbue abstraction with meaning.
