Valerie Maynard

Valerie Maynard (1937 – 2022) was a sculptor, printmaker, writer, and teacher. As an Artists’ Book Resident, she produced Lost and Found, a portfolio of ten silkscreen prints that form part of her No Apartheid series. Maynard stated, “I wanted my work to challenge tyranny whenever and wherever it appeared, irrespective of country or culture.” Valerie holds an MA in sculpture from Goddard College. Throughout her career, she has received many awards, including a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant in Printmaking. The Baltimore Art Museum names  Maynard as “a pioneering member of the Black Arts Movement and beloved icon of the Baltimore arts community, whose multi-decade practice engaged with the complexity of Black identity and experience.” Her legacy is cared for by the Valerie J. Maynard Foundation, which supports research and scholarship on the life, art, pedagogy, and contributions of Dr. Valerie Jean Maynard to 20th-century art.
