Sue Johnson

Sue Johnson’s work is grounded in the tradition of vanitas and still life painting, and often explores the role of the artist as a creator of knowledge. She came to WSW from Maryland for a fellowship (now Workspace Residency) in the etching studio, creating plates for her ongoing mixed-media project, “The Alternate Encyclopedia”, which has been exhibited extensively since 1995. Sue has received several national grants and awards, including an NEA Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation grant, and a Pollock-Krasner fellowship. She holds an MFA in painting from Columbia University and is currently a Professor of Art at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
