Women’s Studio Workshop, a historic and iconic artist-in-residency program in Rosendale, NY is expanding in exciting ways and we are looking for new members to join our team. While growing our physical campus, we are simultaneously expanding our programmatic initiatives. Thanks to the generous support of the Hauser and Wirth Institute, we are hiring an archivist who will be in a position to launch this inaugural program. As we approach our 50th anniversary, we are investing in preserving our history, examining and framing our rich past, and designing innovative programs that pair scholarly research with artistic exploration and experimentation. In joining our team, you will have a strong voice of leadership and opportunities for in-depth analysis of our feminist history while working with artists on a rural campus 90 miles from New York City.

Women’s Studio Workshop envisions a society where women’s visual art is integral to the cultural mainstream and permanently recorded in history. Our special collections aim to record and promote the voice and vision of individual women and trans, intersex, nonbinary and genderfluid artists. We commit to stimulating public involvement, awareness, and support for the visual arts through the materials we collect and promote. Visitors to the archives include students, faculty, researchers, community members, and the general public. 



The Hauser & Wirth Archivist manages and oversees the Women’s Studio Workshop (WSW) archives and special collections by creating as needed documentation of policies, updating and maintaining appropriate archival-quality housing, processing unprocessed collections, creating and updating finding aids, and monitoring the preservation and accessibility of materials in collaboration with the Artistic Director and organizational colleagues, in accordance with national standards and code of ethics. Current collections include: Artist Files & Book Collection, Silkscreen Poster Collection, Photographs, Slides, and Negatives, Organizational Papers and Ephemera, Artist Alumnx Collection, Papermaking Samples and Production Logs, and the Anita Wetzel Collection. Primary duties include managing archival and image requests, working collaboratively with colleagues in various capacities, and assisting in creating and maintaining systems to facilitate easy retrieval of special collections items.

  • Manages all aspects of collections care through documentation, maintenance and handling, use and access, environmental monitoring of objects and facilities, of paper files and archives including processing archival collections.
  • Interacts with the WSW community, responding to loan, research, and publication requests relating to the collections.
  • Assists Artistic Director with book loans and ensures adherence to established policies.
  • Assists in gathering information for proposals and grant applications for special collections-oriented projects with the Artistic Director
  • Collaborates with the Marketing Department on publicity, marketing, catalogs, historical information, websites, and e-communication.
  • Collaborates with other WSW staff, Studio Managers, and Advisory Committee, to establish conservation priorities, plans, and implements the safe storage of all works in the collection and buildings.
  • Establishes and manages record keeping development for all collections materials, working collaboratively with the Programs and Operations Coordinator.
  • Performs archival research on collection materials and/or artifacts for other staff, resident artists, and external researchers.
  • Supervises access to collections for use, research, and exhibition. Monitors the conservation and preservation of materials based on archival standards.
  • Serves on the Advisory Committee, creating reports when needed.



  • Minimum 1-2 years of related experience or education in practicing professional archival standards

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a diverse community.
  • Ability to create, interpret, revise, and apply written materials including as-needed policies, procedures, and finding aids.
  • Manage incoming correspondence and answer research questions in an organized, prioritized, and timely manner.
  • Utilize knowledge of archival best practices including: conservation and preservation techniques and/or procedures for special collections.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities including the development, planning, and implementing of short- and long-range goals.
  • Ability to gather, compile, and analyze data.
  • Access and employ job-related computer software at an effective proficiency.
  • Be able to work collegially and foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Have the ability to prepare reports for the Advisory Committee, Artistic Director, and Executive Director, as needed.
