Ten woodcuts by Zarina: based on Urdu proverbs

A portfolio of woodcut prints based on Urdu proverbs. The beautifully printed images evoke a feeling of mystery and earthiness using bold, abstract shapes and the symbols of a mountain, hand, snake and night sky. Thanks to an update in 2026 from curator Sarah Burney, we now have the translations of the proverbs;

  1. After killing 900 mice, the cat goes for Hajj
  2. The burnt rope keeps its twist
  3. Commemorating grandfather’s wake at the halva shop
  4. The family cooking pot lies broken in the village square
  5. Beating the trace after the snake has gone
  6. The drum sounds sweet at a distance
  7. Night is over and the promises
  8. Out of sight, a mountain no longer there
  9. One who goes blind at the time of the monsoon, sees green the rest of his life
  10. Sprouting mustard seed while still on the palm of the hand

Out of print.
