A Brief People’s Art History of Southeast Queens

With a sense of urgency in response to the rapid gentrification of the neighborhoods of Southeast Queens, Damali Abrams the Glitter Priestess published A Brief People’s Art History of Southeast Queens. Challenging the notion that only “the great” makes history, Abrams’ art history represents the points of view of artists and cultural workers who live and work in Southeast Queens. Inkjet printed on Asuka paper and housed in a handmade paper enclosure with glitter and pink rose petal inclusions, A Brief People’s Art History of Southeast Queens is an alphabetical art history of the artist’s Southeast Queens neighborhood. Drawing from the authors collected oral histories and archival research to preserve the rich art histories of a multicultural community of local artists and business owners who are predominantly working and middle-class Black, Indigenous and people of color, many of whom are (im)migrants.
