Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here.\nYour sketchbook can be a place to record observations\, experiment with materials\, or develop ideas. During this workshop\, we’ll learn how to make our own sketchbooks\, and try a variety of drawing exercises to help us loosen up and expand on our ideas about what our work can be. Rather than working towards a finished product\, we’ll be experimenting with materials and techniques\, and asking ourselves “What would happen if I try this? If I combine these things? If I add/remove/wet/erase/fold/tear/change this?” Great for anyone who is experiencing artist’s block\, or just wants to develop new directions to integrate into their work. \n \n

SUMMARY:Drypoint with Chine Collé with Rie Hasegawa
DESCRIPTION:Drypoint with Chine Collé with Rie Hasegawa \nDates: August 23 – 27\, 2021\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $300-$1200\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 5 \nEnrollment for this class is full. To be placed on the waitlist\, please email info@wsworkshop.org or call 845-658-9133. \nClick Here for Materials List \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a deposit. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here. \n\n\nDrypoint is an intaglio printmaking technique in which an image is scratched into a metal or plastic plate. The scratches produce a “burr” – a raised portion of metal or plastic that catches and holds ink while the smooth portions of the plate can be wiped clean. With the help of an intaglio printing press\, this ink gets transferred to a dampened sheet of paper. \nThis class will demonstrate drypoint techniques with either traditional materials\, copper plate\, rigid vinyl\, or recycled materials\, along with inking and transfering images onto paper. Since the image is created by mechanically scratching the surface of the plate\, almost any tool can be used – from traditional drypoint tools\, to sandpaper\, sewing needles\, knives\, etc. Class instruction will also include techniques such as chine collé (collage technique in printmaking)\, à la poupée (inking up different colors on a single plate)\, and multiple layers with drypoint. All techniques are made with non-toxic printmaking materials and processes. \n

How can these ubiquitous forms be used as inspiration for new hybrid art objects and zines? In this class\, we’ll use humor and absurdity to make zines and collage our everyday experiences on paper. Using fast and easy DIY printing techniques like carbon paper transfers\, Xerox printing\, and a little screenprinting\, we will duplicate forms as blank canvases for our own creative ideas. This class will also delve into WSW’s artist’s book collection to look at experimental book forms. \n

Paper has the potential to have  a “smooth as glass” surface or become a field of lush texture. Skin or substrata\, this wonderful material has endless possibility. \nA thorough investigation into papermaking fibers and traditional tools will be the starting point for a lively exploration of surface\, form\, and content. Basic sheet forming with an eye towards producing high quality papers suitable for use in books and printmaking will lead into a personal exploration of surface and texture. Some bookbinding and sculptural techniques will be covered. Several approaches to color will be introduced including pigmentation\, colored fabrics\, and the use of indigo and walnut dyes\, as time allows. Workshop participants will develop a beautiful portfolio of papers that will carry a great variety of qualities. Each person will be encouraged to find ways of using this material to address their individual aesthetic concerns. All levels of experience are welcome. \n

SUMMARY:Indirect Magic: Working with Linocut with T. Klacsmann
DESCRIPTION:Indirect Magic: Working with Linocut – T. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here.Click Here For Materials List \nRelief carving is a demanding and time-consuming technique historically valued for its capacity for intricate detail and high reproducibility.  I describe it as “indirect\,” firstly\, because\, like all printmaking\, the final image results from contact with an intermediate surface\, the block\, rather than from direct action of the artist. Secondly\, relief carving in particular is at a remove from the gesture of the artist because the positive areas in the final image result from inking material left behind after the removal of block material. Therefore it is not the material that has been acted upon\, but the untouched material that leads to the final marks on the page.  Because it involves removing material\, precision\, commitment and careful planning can all contribute to successful relief prints. \nWe will create a relief print\, taking a linocut block from conception to final printing with a focus on carving discrete objects\, animals\, or figure that can be “cut out” from the surrounding block.  I will demonstrate how both the carved portion and the remaining block material can be inked and printed together to create a complete composition without masking or registration.  I will also cover the safe use of and care for tools\, a variety of options for image transfer\, and block preparation. Each participant will have up to 18 x 12” of block material available\, and we will carve and print a moderately sized (up to 9 x 12”) linocut.  Based on each students’ vision\, we can then explore options such as: shaping the plate\, exploring narrative with the addition of a second shaped plate\, and/or printing block to block to create a mirror image block and print.  I will discuss ink\, paper\, and printing options. By the end of the course\, each participant will have carved and printed a linocut block\, gained an awareness of a variety of strategies for carving relief prints\, and explored some of the many possibilities for creating a finishes prints using these versatile blocks. \nBecause the level difficulty varies widely based on the ambitiousness and complexity of the block attempted\, this course is appropriate for beginners or those with some experience. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Let’s Make Hanji: Korean Papermaking – Aimee Lee \nDates: July 26 – 30\, 2021\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $300-$1200\nLab fee: $75 \nClass Limit:5 \nClick here for Materials List \nEnrollment for this class is full. To be placed on the waitlist\, please email info@wsworkshop.org or call 845-658-9133. \n \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a deposit. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here. \nThis is a class all about making and manipulating Korean paper\, known as hanji. Participants will work together to process raw paper mulberry bark into pulp. We will then make paper in the classical version of hanji\, from a suspended bamboo screen. Participants will transform bark into bark lace and thread for future fiber\, sculpture\, and book applications. Hanji made in Korea will be available to fuse and texture (joomchi)\, cord and twine (jiseung)\, and spin into thread to weave (shifu). Alongside the folklore of hanji\, Aimee will share her hybrid methods of using this strong and versatile material. This is an ideal course for students interested in East Asian paper traditions\, paper’s role in material culture\, and hands-on experience of manual labor and patience that result in luminous paper. \n\n

SUMMARY:Sketchbook Practice with Eleanor Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Sketchbook Practice with Eleanor Anderson \nDates: August 4\,6\, 11\, 13\, 18\, 20\nTime: 7-9PM EST\nTuition: $200 members / $225 non-members\nLevel: all ages (including serious young artists)\nClass Limit: 12 students\n \n \n \n\nArtists have kept visual diaries of their ideas and surroundings throughout history. In this online class\, we’ll explore what that means during this challenging time of COVID-19. Students will get structured prompts for exploring\, playing\, and recording their environment in a sketchbook using basic art supplies and items at hand. We will cover mark making\, pattern generating and meditative techniques for making art at home during this time. Using Zoom as a virtual meeting place\, students will share their work\, receive feedback\, and meet a new group of artists. \nMaterials Required: \nNote: these materials are suggested for this class\, but part of the creative challenge of making art during COVID-19 is using what we have at hand. The most specific materials you will need to complete the assignments are the white out redaction tool\, and the ink stamp pad.  In this spirit\, I gently recommend that you invest in some art supplies\, but know that any one supply can probably be substituted with a tool you have at hand and possibly yield even more exciting results. The recommended brands are my “wish-list” products\, but if cost prohibitive\, a less expensive version will do.  \n\nSketchbook\nColored pencils\nMarkers\nPens: option 1 or option 2\nWatercolors: option 1\, option 2\, or option 3\nSumi ink\nInk pad for stamping\nWhite out redaction tape\nBlack/assorted colored paper for collage (this can also be recycled material  from paper bags\, junk mail\, old newspapers\, etc.)\nGraph paper\nGraphite pencil or #2 pencil\n\nTechnical information: \n\nZoom etiquette\nHow to screen share\n\n  \nIf you had already signed up for a Summer Art Institute class\, or are newly registering for an online workshop or event\, please read our 2020 Refund and Cancellation policies.

SUMMARY:Barrel Firing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Deirdre Puleo\nClass Type: Handbuilding\nSkill Level: All Levels\nTime: Thursdays\, 6:30-8:30 (Sept. 5-19); full-day firing Saturday\, Sept. 21 Firing Rain Date Sept. 28\nDates: September 5 – September 21 \nDiscover a world of pottery without glaze! In this four-session workshop\, you’ll learn how to barrel-fire pots — a modified version of the ancient technique of pit firing. We’ll make and prepare pots using terra sigillatta\, “glaze” the pots using sawdust\, salt\, coffee grounds and other organics\, and fire everything in large barrels loaded with hardwood. The results are unpredictable and one-of-a-kind! No pottery-making experience is necessary. \nNote: “Firing” day is an all-day event. We load the barrels early in the morning and unload sometime in the late afternoon—it depends on the fire! From start to finish\, it’s possibly a 10-hour day. Prepare for the collaborative fun by bringing a picnic lunch\, snacks\, beverages\, folding chairs\, blankets\, and a sense of wonder! Though attendance for the entire day is not necessary\, it is highly encouraged. \n$360.00 members/$405.00 non-members\, plus a $50 lab fee to cover additional materials. Tuition includes one bag of clay and bisque firing fees. Registration is online only\, and is first come first serve. SUMMARY:Box as Portrait - Golnar Adili
DESCRIPTION:Box as Portrait – Golnar Adili \nDates: August 12-16\, 2019\nStudio: Bindery\nClass limit: 4\nTuition: $750 members / $800 non-members\nLab fee: $75 \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a $300 deposit. \n\n\n\n\n  \nMaterials List \nIn this class\, we will examine portraiture in the context of the box utilizing design\, architectural thinking and book arts. We will cover different iterations of boxes depending on the content each participant is hoping to house and express. This could range from combinations such as an image of a face covering parts of a simple “shoe box” to more complex interpretations of portraiture such as embedding an object or a loved one’s piece of clothing in a clamshell or nesting boxes. \nInitially we will use a simple solvent transfer technique to multiply the image in mind on various desirable papers to ultimately use to cover the box. In developing the appropriate home for our portrait we will use fundamental book arts elements such as hinges and the accordion\, and some architecture concepts such as sheathing\, scaffolding\, and landscape. A mixed media approach is highly encouraged as we will experiment with encaustic\, plaster rolls and collage.
