SUMMARY:Collagraph Combo
DESCRIPTION:Collagraph Combo – Sue Oehme \nDates: August 15-19\, 2022\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale $300 – $1200\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 8 \nClick Here For Materials List \nIn this weeklong workshop\, participants will spend the first 2 days creating various collograph matrices including silk aquatint\, paper collograph\, carborundum aquatint and drypoint\, with demos and guidance from the instructor. We will work with either 8 x 12 or 12 x 12 sizes to keep registration simple. These finished plates will then be printed in oil-based ink colors with the addition of watercolor elements and stencils.  \nThese techniques work well with many varied artistic styles\, including both realism and abstract images. Some artists prefer to create plates that all work well together in various combinations\, while others may prefer to focus on one or two of the techniques and create a complete image which can be editioned. \nParticipants should bring sketches and ideas with them to class\, as well as images of other prints or paintings. It is also encouraged to bring any flat materials to use in your collograph plate building\, such as lace\, textured fabrics or papers\, tree bark\, sandpaper\, or 2 ply mat board. \nIn order to reserve your space in the workshop\, we require a $150 deposit. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here. \n\n \n\n\n\nSelect the option which best reflects your capability to pay:\n\n\n$150 Deposit (Total Tuition $1200)$150 Deposit (Total Tuition $1100)$150 Deposit (Total Tuition $1000)$150 Deposit (Total Tuition $900)$150 Deposit (Total Tuition $800)$150 Deposit (Total Tuition $700)$150 Deposit (Total Tuition $600)$150 Deposit (Total Tuition $500)$150 Deposit (Total Tuition $400)$150 Deposit (Total Tuition $300)

SUMMARY:Slow Looking: The Printed Multiple in the Public’s Eye
DESCRIPTION:Slow Looking: The Printed Multiple in the Public’s Eye – Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo \nDates: August 15 – 19\, 2022\nStudio: Silkscreen\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $300-$1200\nLab fee: $75\nClass limit: 8 \nClick Here for Materials List \nSlow Looking invites participants to create printed work inspired by and based in the spaces\, people and communities that surround their lives. Through storytelling\, daily site rituals\, public art\, and installation\, we will be asking questions such as: What does it mean to make work in the public eye? How can our work affect or be affected by the spaces that surround us? What does the printed multiple tell us about our own histories? \nFrom exploring the world around us with a viewfinder tool to monoprinted installations and from historic research about the cities we come from to screen printed banners. We will learn from maintenance art\, printed political graphics\, manifestos\, mutual aid and cooperative work. And draw inspiration from artists including Emory Douglas\, Corita Kent\, The Detroit Printing Collective\, Queer. Art Archive and Press Press\, amongst others. \nIn order to reserve your space in the workshop\, we require a deposit.

SUMMARY:Natural Colorants for Book and Paper Arts
DESCRIPTION:Natural Colorants for Book and Paper Arts – Natalie Stopka \nDates: August 1 – 5\, 2022\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $300-$1200\nLab fee: $90\nClass limit: 8 \nClick Here for Materials List \nWorking with natural colorants is a wonderful way to creatively engage with the ecologies around us. In this five-day course students are introduced to beautiful\, sustainable colors for dye\, ink and watercolor. We’ll look into the historical and material sympathy between natural colorants and traditional bookbinding fibers: cloth\, thread\, and paper. After learning the best practices for immersion dyeing these materials\, we’ll convert leftover dye to make pigments for writing inks and watercolor paints. Students will depart with an understanding of the chemistry governing dye\, pigment\, and permanence. They’ll take home the beginnings of their own swatch library and an array of finished ink and paint to fold into their studio practice. Previous experience is not required. \n\nIn order to reserve your space in the workshop\, we require a $150 deposit. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here. \n\n\n \n\n\nSelect the option which best reflects your capability to pay:\n\n\n$150 Deposit (Total Tuition $1200) $150 Deposit (Total Tuition $1100) $150 Deposit (Total Tuition $1000) $150 Deposit (Total Tuition $900) $150 Deposit (Total Tuition $800) $150 Deposit (Total Tuition $700) $150 Deposit (Total Tuition $600) $150 Deposit (Total Tuition $500) $150 Deposit (Total Tuition $400) $150 Deposit (Total Tuition $300)

SUMMARY:Drypoint with Chine Collé: Multi-colors and Layers
DESCRIPTION:Drypoint with Chine Collé: Multi-colors and Layers – Rie Hasegawa \nDates: August 1 – 5\, 2022\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $300-$1200\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 8 \nClick Here for Materials List \nDrypoint is an intaglio printmaking technique in which an image is scratched into a metal or plastic plate. The scratches produce a “burr”: a raised portion of metal or plastic that catch and hold ink while the smooth portions of the plate can be wiped clean. With the help of an intaglio printing press\, this ink gets transferred to a dampened sheet of paper. \nThis workshop will demonstrate drypoint techniques either with traditional materials\, copper plate\, rigid vinyl or recycled materials\, and how to ink and transfer image onto paper. Since the image is created by mechanically scratching the surface of the plate\, almost any tool can be used – from traditional drypoint tools\, to sandpaper\, sewing needles\, knives and etc. Instruction will also include producing other techniques such as Chine Collé (collage technique in printmaking)\, À la poupée (inking up different colors on a single plate) and multi layers with your drypoints. All techniques are made with non-toxic printmaking materials and processes \n\nIn order to reserve your space in the workshop\, we require a $150 deposit.

Rather than working towards a finished product\, we’ll be experimenting with materials and techniques\, and asking ourselves “What would happen if I try this? If I combine these things? If I add/remove/wet/erase/fold/tear/change this?” Great for anyone who is experiencing artist’s block\, or just wants to develop new directions to integrate into their work. \n \n

SUMMARY:Drypoint with Chine Collé with Rie Hasegawa
DESCRIPTION:Drypoint with Chine Collé with Rie Hasegawa \nDates: August 23 – 27\, 2021\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $300-$1200\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 5 \nEnrollment for this class is full. To be placed on the waitlist\, please email info@wsworkshop.org or call 845-658-9133. \nClick Here for Materials List \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a deposit. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here. \n\n\nDrypoint is an intaglio printmaking technique in which an image is scratched into a metal or plastic plate. The scratches produce a “burr” – a raised portion of metal or plastic that catches and holds ink while the smooth portions of the plate can be wiped clean. With the help of an intaglio printing press\, this ink gets transferred to a dampened sheet of paper. \nThis class will demonstrate drypoint techniques with either traditional materials\, copper plate\, rigid vinyl\, or recycled materials\, along with inking and transfering images onto paper. Since the image is created by mechanically scratching the surface of the plate\, almost any tool can be used – from traditional drypoint tools\, to sandpaper\, sewing needles\, knives\, etc. Class instruction will also include techniques such as chine collé (collage technique in printmaking)\, à la poupée (inking up different colors on a single plate)\, and multiple layers with drypoint. All techniques are made with non-toxic printmaking materials and processes. \n

Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here.Click Here For Materials List \nRelief carving is a demanding and time-consuming technique historically valued for its capacity for intricate detail and high reproducibility.  I describe it as “indirect\,” firstly\, because\, like all printmaking\, the final image results from contact with an intermediate surface\, the block\, rather than from direct action of the artist. Secondly\, relief carving in particular is at a remove from the gesture of the artist because the positive areas in the final image result from inking material left behind after the removal of block material. Therefore it is not the material that has been acted upon\, but the untouched material that leads to the final marks on the page.  Because it involves removing material\, precision\, commitment and careful planning can all contribute to successful relief prints. \nWe will create a relief print\, taking a linocut block from conception to final printing with a focus on carving discrete objects\, animals\, or figure that can be “cut out” from the surrounding block.  I will demonstrate how both the carved portion and the remaining block material can be inked and printed together to create a complete composition without masking or registration.  I will also cover the safe use of and care for tools\, a variety of options for image transfer\, and block preparation. Each participant will have up to 18 x 12” of block material available\, and we will carve and print a moderately sized (up to 9 x 12”) linocut.  Based on each students’ vision\, we can then explore options such as: shaping the plate\, exploring narrative with the addition of a second shaped plate\, and/or printing block to block to create a mirror image block and print.  I will discuss ink\, paper\, and printing options. By the end of the course\, each participant will have carved and printed a linocut block\, gained an awareness of a variety of strategies for carving relief prints\, and explored some of the many possibilities for creating a finishes prints using these versatile blocks. \nBecause the level difficulty varies widely based on the ambitiousness and complexity of the block attempted\, this course is appropriate for beginners or those with some experience. \n \n
