This course will introduce several alternative planographic printing techniques such as kitchen litho that is an alternative way of lithography using common materials you have at home such as tin foil\, soda and white vinegar and also watercolor monotype and stencil. We will go over how to make several book structures by hand including one page books\, accordion books\, pamphlet bindings\, flexagons and drum leaf bindings. We’ll make one collaborative zine together as a workshop and then participants will spend the rest of the workshop developing\, printing and binding a small edition of artists’ books. The silkscreen printing process will allow us to create multiples of our book pages. Participants will learn how to create hand drawn and digital transparencies\, expose their images to the screen and print several copies of their book pages! \nParticipants can come to the workshop with an idea for their artist’s book in mind but we will also have some time for brainstorming and working through strategies for developing content. The instructor will be available to work with each student to tailor their idea to an appropriate book structure and go over efficient ways to lay out pages for silkscreen printing. DESCRIPTION:Combine\, Layer\, Overlap: Guided Monoprint – Tara Sabharwal \nDates: July 28 – August 1\, 2025\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab Fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nCreate a rich and multifaceted print\, using one-off pre-printed rice papers as a launching point! After monoprinting a variety of marks\, drawing\, colors\, script\, or textures on your choice on several rice papers\, we will add adhesive to them\, converting them into Chine Collé sheets. We will then design monoprints with these chine collé papers in mind\, cutting them into shapes as needed\, with attention to content and composition. By combining the two processes we will work with order and chance\, random mark making and intention. We will use brushes\, Inkjet and mylar stencils\, Q- tips\, rags\, a range of solvents\, aluminum foil\, string\, collage material\, natural and found material to make marks and textures on the paper. We will work on 18”x24” plexiglass sheets with water soluble inks. Acid-free adhesive can also be used to create an added collage effect after the print is dry. Participants will learn the mechanics of working with various fibers in pulp painting\, to make pulp paints from start to finish and to build an expansive pulp paint palette. Participants will learn various pulp painting techniques\, and will learn to incorporate stenciling\, wet collaging and blowout techniques in their work. During open studio time\, participants will have the opportunity to create a series of work that serves as an exploration of pulp painting as an expressive art form. Anderson\, Lesley Dill\, Candy Gonzalez\, Lina Puerta\, Paul Wong\, Saya Woolfalk\, and Tricia Wright. These eight visual artists\, all working in hand papermaking\, draw upon paper’s connection to ritual offerings\, to the body\, and to paper’s role as a keeper of memory. Paper’s historic use in communicating personal memory\, collective history\, and spiritual beliefs manifests more deeply when we reflect on its ancient history–before it became a substrate for the written word or images. The earliest recorded reference to paper dates back to A.D. 105 in China\, where paper acted as a votive or offering\, a material used in faith-based ritual practice as an aid to speak to deities or to ward off evil spirits. Much of the artwork in this exhibition takes the form of shrines\, altars\, or reliquaries\, alluding to connections between ritual practice and our contemporary understanding of what holds collective memory and its ancient antecedents. All of the works in this exhibition were created in the studios of Dieu Donné\, finding their forms in handmade paper. For more than four decades\, Dieu Donné has worked at the forefront of a movement to forge this powerfully subversive medium.This storied institution was founded in New York in order to explore the untapped potential of hand papermaking as an art medium. Artists participating in this exhibition include master papermakers like Paul Wong and long-time hand papermaker Lesley Dill\, who have worked with paper for over 30 years\, as well as artists that have recently learned the papermaking process through the Dieu Donné Workspace or through their professional studio programs. These programs pair artists from a wide variety of practices with master papermakers to explore the creative possibilities of hand papermaking\, fostering experimentation and innovative processes. DESCRIPTION:Printing to Infinity: Endless Silkscreen Repeats for Installation – Liz Castaldo \nDates: July 21 – July 25\, 2025\nStudio: Silkscreen (Second Floor\, located up one flight of stairs*)\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab Fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nIn this workshop we will explore the endless possibilities of working with patterns\, and learn how to turn small components into large scale wall installations\, wallpaper\, or even covering three dimensional objects. We’ll cover multiple methods to create repeatable patterns from participants’ own drawings or photos\, that have the potential to be tiled together to create an endless repeat. Participants will also learn the Silkscreen printing process\, which gives us the ability to make many multiples of our modular patterns. We will discuss multiple color printing\, methods for loose and tight registration\, color mixing\, and layering pattern and color on the same print. Once participants have made an edition of prints we’ll get them up on the wall and strategize creative ways to display them and options for attaching prints to the wall. \nWe will contextualize this concept by looking at examples by artists working with repeat pattern and tessellation such as Lanette Scheeline\, MC Escher and Julia Rothman and examples from the WSW collection. \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a $250 nonrefundable deposit. DESCRIPTION:Building Edges in Monoprint – Tara Sabharwal \nDates:  July 21 – July 25\, 2025\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab Fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nWe will make monoprints\, exploring lines and shapes to build a vocabulary of EDGES. Besides brushes we will use Inkjet sheets and mylar stencils for hard\, sharp edges\, remove ink with Q- tips and rags to make softer edges and collage material for perforated edges\, scrape ink for dry\, abrasive edges and use a range of solvents to make fluid\, flowing edges. Participants can also scratch on the plexiglass sheet and print the inked\, scratched or dry point mark to create whimsical\, blurry edges. String\, wool and rope\, can be explored to make embossed edges. We will work on 18”x24” plexiglass sheets with water soluble inks. Smaller sheets can be purchased for the dry point option. Using experimental casting processes rooted in fiber properties and hand papermaking techniques\, participants will learn to record dimension\, texture\, and surface with paper pulp. Beginning with technical basics such as fiber processing and sheet formation\, participants will apply these skills to a variety of paper casting methods. This workshop will cover carved and collaged low relief mould making and use\, various approaches to found moulds\, basic plaster mould making and filling\, two-part mould making with oven-bake clay\, and laminate casting objects with high shrinkage fibers. This course will cover ways of working applicable both to professional and more improvisational studio contexts. Is it a sculpture? Could it be both? Come learn the basics of Risograph while also experimenting with structure and form through folded paper! In this workshop we will go over the basics of the Risograph machine\, a brief history of stencil duplicators (Risograph)\, and experiment with folded forms to help participants wrap their minds around how to plan\, design\, and then print their sculptural books. Templates will be provided to participants prior to the workshop\, though participants can work on their own designs if they like. This workshop is for both newbies\, as well participants who have used stencil duplicators before\, and for anyone who would like to create books that break out of traditional formats\, and/or are into creating paper sculptures without a narrative. Through this one week intensive workshop\, we will delve into the archive\, using the risograph with digital drawing and photographic sources. We will review the basics of how the riso operates and how to prepare simple files for printing. We will then dive deeper into digital manipulation by learning to play with halftones\, duotones and CMYK. \nThe workshop will culminate in a print exchange between the class. Participants will be encouraged to collect archival imagery of interest to them prior to the beginning of the course. Ideas for source material will be shared by the instructor before the class begins to support you in your research process. Brighten up your kitchen counter with a raccoon sugar bowl and matching spoon. Make a squirrel-themed paint palette with mushroom brush rest and woodsy water vessel. But who decides which of these important artifacts are created and produced on a scale wide enough to ensure their survival? In this course\, we’ll create objects and prints inspired by historical documents and propaganda. Through the commercial printing process of letterpress printing\, we’ll create large editions of these important artifacts. The course will include printing techniques based on handset wood and metal type as well as image recreation using photopolymer plates. Basic hand-binding techniques will also be incorporated. We will use textiles as the basis for various creative techniques such as embedding\, embossing\, stenciling\, blowouts\, collage\, and pulp painting. We’ll use high and low shrinkage pulps\, including cotton\, translucent abaca\, linen\, and flax to experiment with surface textures and different ways of drying. We’ll cover various methods of altering the paper once dry\, as well as finishing treatments and surface manipulation. There will be daily demonstrations and discussions\, and students are encouraged to explore and experiment. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Chrystal O’Boyle\nClass Type: Four-week handbuilding class\nSkill Level: All Levels\nTime: Fridays 4 – 6 pm\nDates: August 9 – 30\nMake Up Date: September 6 \nThis four-week class will explore the possibilities of slab construction\, transforming two-dimensional slabs of clay into 3D geometric objects with lids. To add a unique twist to our straight-walled geometric boxes we will explore Mishima\, a traditional inlay decoration technique. This class encourages participants to take this time to have fun designing a unique functional item for everyday use! \nChrystal O’Boyle (she/her) has had a lifelong love of the arts. Born and raised in Fayetteville\, Arkansas\, Chrystal attended the School of Art at the University of Arkansas and graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in art education. In 2018\, she became a teaching artist at the Community Creative Center\, instructing classes in ceramics\, painting\, and glass fusing. In the 2021-2022 school year\, she completed her post-baccalaureate at the University of Oklahoma studying ceramics. While in Oklahoma\, she also worked as a studio school instructor at Oklahoma Contemporary. In the 2022-2023\, Chrystal served as an Emerging Artist in Residence at Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft. Now\, she is pursuing her MFA in Ceramics at SUNY New Paltz in New York. When she isn’t in the studio\, she enjoys reading\, hiking\, and spending time with friends and family. \n$195.00 tuition includes one bag of clay and firing fees. DESCRIPTION:Mokuhanga and Emakimono: Two Week Course in Woodblock Printing and Scroll Making – Yoonmi Nam and Katie Baldwin \nDates: August 5 – August 16\, 2024\nStudio: Intaglio and Silkscreen\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $700 – $2400\nLab fee: $150\nClass limit: 12 \nIn this two-week course\, participants will immerse themselves in the process of learning Mokuhanga and Emakimono. Mokuhanga is Japanese-style water-based woodblock printing and Emakimono is the term for a horizontal Japanese handscroll with pictures. \nThis workshop will be an introduction to the printing process mokuhanga\, which uses water-based pigments (or sumi ink)\, a kento registration method\, and hand printing with a baren. Participants will learn about tools and materials\, and the carving and printing methods associated with this process. All participants will have the opportunity to carve and print two projects: a single-block and a multiple-block. One of the wonderful aspects of this process is that it does not require a press or a large workspace and it is non-toxic! \nThe printed single-block edition will be exchanged amongst the members of the class and used to create an Emakimono\, a traditional Japanese scroll with a sequence of narrative images. Using traditional fabric and paper mounting techniques\, participants will learn how to connect multiple mokuhanga prints together to create a continuous horizontal image in a handscroll structure. \nIn order to reserve your space in this two week course\, we require a $300 nonrefundable deposit. We’ll explore how we can use different densities of pulp\, and a variety of tools\, to achieve different mark-making on our sheets. Let’s share some of those one-of-a-kind stories with one another! In this workshop\, you will work to build confidence and curiosity in exploring your own history\, trajectory\, and existence to a point where you are comfortable sharing with others. Start by gathering evidence of your lived experiences—photos\, journals\, sketches\, objects\, and more—and then translate your own stories and memories into distinctive\, shareable pieces produced using the Risograph. Throughout the week-long workshop\, we will discuss methods for creating content for your books\, explore techniques for printing on the Riso\, and analyze different book structures to find the best outlet for your narratives. One-sheet\, movable\, 3-dimensional\, and multipage bookbinding techniques will be demonstrated. In this week-long workshop participants will be introduced to a variety of intaglio as well as relief techniques\, including drypoint\, carborundum aquatint\, silk aquatint\, textural relief printing\, and a variety of multiple printing and collaging processes to combine several plates to achieve sumptuous\, multilayered prints. We will learn how to incorporate simple\, but effective techniques such as stenciling\, à la poupée wiping\, and Chine collé. Workshop will cover the following processes: electro-line\, electro-tint\, experimental electro-graphite\, along with the electro-galvanizing method. Non-toxic BIG ground and other safer solutions will be used.\nBy the end of this workshop\, participants will not only print a small edition of their prints\, but also gain the knowledge and confidence to set up their own electro-etching tank in their studio. SUMMARY:Handbuilding for the Table: Designing Organic Functional Ware with Avery Wells
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Avery Wells\nClass Type: Four-week handbuilding class\nSkill Level: All Levels\nTime: Thursdays 5:30 – 7:30 pm\nDates: July 11 – August 1\nMake Up Date: August 8 \nThis four week class will explore how handbuilding can encourage us to slow down and approach our work with intention\, while still leaving plenty of room for play. Through pinching and coiling\, we will create unique pots that celebrate gestural marks and organic forms. Creative approaches to feet\, handles\, and lids will be emphasized as places where your individual vision can shine. In our last class\, we will decorate the forms we have made and explore how color and texture can accentuate our designs! \nAvery Wells (she/they) is an educator and artist living in Kingston\, NY. She grew up in North Carolina\, and moved to the Hudson Valley to get her MFA at SUNY New Paltz. Avery’s work explores feminine histories in the decorative arts and seeks alternate routes away from traditional standards of beauty and craft. She is excited to return to WSW and share the joy of clay!  \n$195.00 tuition includes one bag of clay and firing fees. Registration is online only\, and is first come first serve. To inquire about the wait list call WSW at (845) 658-9133 or email info@wsworkshop.org. \nKilns will be fired on a weekly basis. One 25 lb bag of clay will be provided with the class. Additional clay can be purchased for $30/25lb bag  if needed. The outdoor class area will be available for students to use throughout the week during daylight hours. There will not be access to our basement studio at this time as we are working to build a better space. There will be some personal shelving space for each student to store clay tools and some work in process. Shelving dimensions are approximately: 17” x 10” x  24”. \n  \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Demystifying the Pop-up Book – Colette Fu \nDates: July 8 – 12\, 2024\nStudio: Silkscreen\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $350-$1200\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 6 \nMovable books were originally created to illustrate ideas about astronomy\, fortune telling\, navigation\, anatomy of the body\, and other scientific principles. Most commercial pop-up book publications today are geared toward children\, but pop-up book structures can be used to make engaging works of art for any age- from greeting cards to animations to kinetic sculptures. Complex and engaging pop-up structures are created from a combination of basic mechanisms enhanced by play and imagination. In this workshop\, students will learn the basic elements of pop-up paper engineering to more complex mechanisms including platforms\, rotating discs\, and pull-tabs. We will also briefly discuss how a commercial pop-up book is manufactured and view examples of how pop-up is used in other formats. Most of all\, students will learn how to effectively incorporate their own art into their structures to create unique pop-up books\, cards\, and works of art. Open to all levels. \nThis workshop takes place in our silkscreen studio\, which is located on the second floor up a flight of stairs. \nThis course is currently full. In this workshop\, we will discuss the differences between public art\, social art\, and civic art\, and the nuances of making work that lives outside. Different methods of mural installation will be explored\, and—as a group—we will create a thematic mural. No prior painting or mural experience is required! \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a $150 nonrefundable deposit. WSW offers a sliding tuition model for the Summer Art Institute\, and you can pick your desired tuition level from the drop-down menu at check-out. If you are in a position to pay full tuition or more\, we request that you do so. The pay-as-you-can model is not based on tax returns or documentation\, rather your self-determined capacity to pay.
