SUMMARY:Demystifying the Pop-up Book with Colette Fu
DESCRIPTION:Demystifying the Pop-up Book – Colette Fu \nDates: July 8 – 12\, 2024\nStudio: Silkscreen\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $350-$1200\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 6 \nMovable books were originally created to illustrate ideas about astronomy\, fortune telling\, navigation\, anatomy of the body\, and other scientific principles. Most commercial pop-up book publications today are geared toward children\, but pop-up book structures can be used to make engaging works of art for any age- from greeting cards to animations to kinetic sculptures. Complex and engaging pop-up structures are created from a combination of basic mechanisms enhanced by play and imagination. In this workshop\, students will learn the basic elements of pop-up paper engineering to more complex mechanisms including platforms\, rotating discs\, and pull-tabs. Inspired by rhythm and abstraction\, we will use various mark-making and pattern-making techniques to prepare textures and images with colored cotton thread on Solvy. Laying this embroidery on freshly couched cotton and abaca paper\, we will fuse the materials to make the fibers bond and the images float. Dried paper sheets might be cut\, folded\, and further embroidered to create objects with volume and narrative. No paper-making or embroidery experience necessary. Participants will learn the various steps of using pulp to make paper\, and simple stitching to make images that come alive with repetition and movement. Through play and collaboration each participant will have the opportunity to develop their ideas and work. \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a deposit. From the drop down menu below\, please select your desired tuition level. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here.

SUMMARY:Collagraph & Embossment/Debossment with Rie Hasegawa
DESCRIPTION:Collagraph & Embossment/Debossment – Rie Hasegawa \nDates: August 7 – 11\, 2023\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $350-$1200\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 8 \nThis class is currently full. If you’d like to be added to our waitlist please email info@wsworkshop.org or call 845-658-9133. \nCollagraph is a basic method of printmaking using collage materials such as fabric\, strings and gesso to create a plate without the use of acid or any solvents and print from a variety of textures. It could be treated as relief or intaglio plate. In the regular printing of mediums with depth like relief and intaglio\, plates are inked up and pressed against a paper surface to leave an imprint. In contrast\, Embossing and Debossing involve printing without ink\, using the plate and press to create a physical impression on paper. Both processes are similar techniques that create a different result. Embossing produces a raised impression onto paper (or other surface) while Debossing does the opposite\, causing a depressed impression in the paper. In this class\, we will construct collagraph plates and print with/without ink \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a deposit. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here. \n

SUMMARY:Handmade Paper and Encaustic with Laura Moriarty
DESCRIPTION:Handmade Paper and Encaustic – Laura Moriarty \nDates: July 31 – August 4\, 2023\nStudio: Papermaking and R&F\nTuition: Members $775\, Nonmembers $825\nLab fee: $75\nClass limit: 7 \nThis class is currently full. If you’d like to be added to our waitlist please email info@wsworkshop.org or call 845-658-9133. \nJoin WSW in collaboration with R&F Handmade Paints in Kingston as we explore combining handmade paper and encaustic. During the first two and a half days\, participants will work in WSW’s papermaking studio\, using cotton\, kozo and other natural ArtFarm fibers. Students will be encouraged to develop a series of works as they learn the basics of sheet forming\, collaging\, embedding\, stenciling\, pulp painting\, and embossing. Our focus will be to work experimentally\, thinking about how to best use the qualities of each fiber for subsequent combining with encaustic\, leaving ‘room’ for more to happen. \nAfter lunch on Wednesday\, we will travel to R&F Handmade Paints\, where we will work in their encaustic studio\, using our handmade papers as the starting point for unique mixed-media works with wax. After Laura leads an introduction to basic encaustic painting techniques\, students will continue to develop their individual series. Experimentation and invention will be encouraged\, and a variety of techniques will be introduced\, including dipping\, lamination\, collage\, inscribing\, image transfer\, and mixed media applications. The emphasis will be to use encaustic to enhance the special characteristics of our handmade paper\, and tell a more layered story. \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a deposit. Take advantage of the inspiring golden hours to express yourself creatively during our Plein Air Pottery sessions at WSW. While we work on our new and improved studio\, our ceramic program is setting up camp on the back deck outside of the silkscreen studio! The drawing process will be broken down into accessible and simple steps\, in an effort to demystify the process. \n$185.00 tuition includes one bag of clay and firing fees. Registration is online only\, and is first come first serve. To inquire about the wait list call WSW at (845) 658-9133 or email info@wsworkshop.org. \nKilns will be fired on a weekly basis. One 25 lb bag of clay will be provided with the class. Additional clay can be purchased for $30/25lb bag  if needed. The outdoor class area will be available for students to use throughout the week during daylight hours. There will not be access to our basement studio at this time as we are working to build a better space. There will be some personal shelving space for each student to store clay tools and some work in process. Shelving dimensions are approximately: 17” x 10” x  24”. \n\n\n\n\n
