SUMMARY:Veils\, Layers\, Illusions with Jaz Graf
DESCRIPTION:Veils\, Layers\, Illusions – Jaz Graf \nDates: July 6 – 10\, 2026\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nWorking with mulberry\, cotton and overbeaten abaca fibers\, we will explore light\, layering and illusions in handmade paper. Stencils will be used as masks and for blowouts\, a process of using water spray to create unique shapes in pulp. We will consider combinations of opacity and translucency through double-couching\, and embedding materials between layers of pulp. A deckle box offers possibilities to integrate inclusions and ombre effects. We will use a forced air restraint stack dryer to flatten sheets\, while embracing the natural cockle and textured surfaces inherent to mixing fibers which shrink at different rates. Come with an open mind\, patience for abaca to drain\, and a passion for process. All levels. \nPapermaking is a wet process; participants should be prepared with waterproof or water-safe shoes and clothing. This workshop will involve prolonged periods of standing\, often requiring repeated movements in the upper body\, and the maneuvering of heavy items. \nThis workshop is currently full. To be added to the waitlist\, email info@wsworkshop.org. \n  \n  \n artist-made paper\, thai mulberry\, bark lace\, abaca\, handmade paper\, papermaking\, fiber art \n

SUMMARY:Riso Ephemera: Printing the Day with Emily Larned
DESCRIPTION:Riso Ephemera: Printing the Day – Emily Larned \nDates: July 6 – 10\, 2026\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 6 \nOriginally denoting a plant that lives only a single day\, ephemera means both “things of no lasting significance” (Merriam Webster) as well as a subset of those things which become rare\, covetable\, and significant because of their expendable nature and their inextricable link to a specific moment in time. \nIn this workshop you will create a personal collection of riso-printed ephemera by tending to your daily experience and the potentialities of your ever-updating present. You will: 1) gain familiarization with the various functions and possibilities of the riso; 2) explore various print formats through hands-on making; 3) survey a wide range of riso printed examples brought to class as well as ephemera housed in the WSW Archives; 4) cultivate your artistic attention and creative response through prompts\, readings\, and attention practices. In attending to the now and now and now\, you will collaborate with paper\, the riso\, and the contents of each day as a vital way of life: responding to the moment through making. Suitable for both beginners to risography and the book arts\, as well as those who wish to deepen their printing and publishing practice. \nThis workshop takes place in our silkscreen studio located on the second floor\, up a flight of stairs. \nThis workshop is currently full. To be added to the waitlist\, email info@wsworkshop.org.

SUMMARY:Seeing Topographies with Golnar Adili
DESCRIPTION:Seeing Topographies – Golnar Adili \nDates: July 13 – 17\, 2026\nStudio: Bindery\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $150\nClass limit: 4 \nIn this class we will give depth to the printed image by learning how to divide the surface into stepped topographies. We will review both organic terrains and geometric ones\, through tearing\, cutting or perforations\, and ultimately stacking. This kind of image distortion will straddle between 2 and 3 dimensions and make the flat image 3D. In doing so\, we will use the accordion form in its different manifestations to give movement to our investigations\, a great reminder of this versatile form. We will conclude these studies by making a home for our now 3D image and call it a book! \nThis workshop is currently full. To be added to the waitlist\, email info@wsworkshop.org. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Single Block Magic: Reduction Printing by Hand with Yetunde Rodriguez
DESCRIPTION:Single Block Magic: Reduction Printing by Hand – Yetunde Rodriguez \nDates: July 20 – 24\, 2026\nStudio: Silkscreen\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $150\nClass limit: 8 \nReady to move beyond creating a single-color print? This is the opportunity for a deep dive into the complex relief printing techniques of the reduction print. With a single block of material\, you will design\, carve\, and print a vibrant\, multi-layered work of art. This method involves carving the block in stages\, resulting in rich\, layered compositions that can’t be achieved any other way. This intensive format provides the dedicated time necessary to master registration\, color theory\, and fine detail carving\, ensuring you leave with a quality addition of prints and a robust set of advanced skills. Printing by hand rather than on a press ensures you can continue this practice well beyond the life of the workshop\, and in any home studio setup. All skill levels are welcome! \nThis workshop takes place in our silkscreen studio located on the second floor\, up a flight of stairs. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:I Love Your Layers – Shelley Thorstensen \nDates: August 10 – 14\, 2026\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 6 \nLet’s get closer to the place where people say\, “I love your layers\,” and create seamless\, surprising work together. In this workshop\, we’ll focus on proofing—making beautiful versions of your image so you\, the artist\, can choose which ones to edition. Thorstensen says\, “This is at the heart of how I work\, and I’m excited to share both systematic tips I’ve learned over the years and intuitive approaches tailored to each student.” \nBring a small plate (about 8 x 10″ to 9 x 12″) you’ve worked on\, and feel free to make quick plates (collograph\, relief\, litho) to supplement it. The class will focus on layering and printing\, giving you plenty of hands-on experience with the creative process. While participants won’t be learning new plate-making techniques\, Thorstensen will be present to advise and support you in your plate-making endeavors\, offering feedback and suggestions as you work. \nA materials list will be provided to help you prepare. For now\, find or create a plate you want to use and start a Pinterest-style wish list or mood board of things you love—color\, form\, ideas\, anything that inspires you. Bring it along\, and we’ll jump off from there. \nAs you will need to bring premade plates\, previous experience with printmaking is required. There will be some periods of prolonged standing. \nThis workshop is currently full. To be added to the waitlist\, please email info@wsworkshop.org \n

SUMMARY:Maximalize Your Prints: Variable Editions in Silkscreen with Elizabeth Castaldo
DESCRIPTION:Maximalize Your Prints: Variable Editions in Silkscreen – Elizabeth Castaldo \nDates: August 10 – 14\, 2026\nStudio: Silkscreen\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $125\nClass limit: 6 \nIn this silkscreen workshop we will explore ways to bring variety and spontaneity into printed editions. In variable editions\, each print features imagery that is repeated\, but with some alterations from print to print. Using silkscreen\, which allows us to create editioned multiples relatively easily\, we’ll mix things up\, going over several ways to print variations on images and then layering them up to create multi-layered colorful unique prints and variable editions. \nYou’ll learn the silkscreen printing process from start to finish and then experiment with several ways to bring unique and varied elements into your prints. We will go over how to use paper and vinyl stencils\, masking fluid\, double exposure\, and monotype techniques which will allow us to alter the images on the screen as we are printing and approach the printing process in an intuitive and spontaneous way. \nBy using personal drawings or photos\, we will cover ways to prepare images for silkscreen using both analog and digital methods. We will go over approaches for composing multiple color prints\, registration methods\, color mixing\, and layering image\, pattern and color in the same print. \nDepending on your goals for your work\, we will make at least one small variable edition or several unique prints over the course of the week. \nThis concept will be contextualized with examples by artists working with variable and layered imagery and examples from the WSW collection. \nThis workshop takes place in our silkscreen studio located on the second floor\, up a flight of stairs. There will be some periods of prolonged standing. \n \n

SUMMARY:Many Hands: Collaborative Pulp Painting with Kelly Taylor Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Many Hands: Collaborative Pulp Painting – Kelly Taylor Mitchell \nDates: August 17 – 21\, 2026\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nMany Hands is a pulp painting workshop that emphasizes collaborative process. This workshop challenges the notion of an isolated artist practice and alternatively invites participants to work together to create a large-scale collaborative handmade paperwork. This collaborative papermaking project will center improvisation and intuition as aesthetic guides. We will look to artists and writers who articulate the power of prioritizing the act\, the feeling\, and the experience of doing over a fixation on outcomes. Tools like prompt-based free writing\, reading and discussion will support our collaborative and process orientated exploration. Overbeaten linen and flax fibers will be used to explore techniques in pigmentation\, sheet formation and various pulp painting techniques. This workshop is a great fit for artists who want to explore not just papermaking\, but the creative process. It is essential that participants are eager and open to collaboration. \nPapermaking is a wet process; participants should be prepared with waterproof or water-safe shoes and clothing. This workshop will involve prolonged periods of standing\, often requiring repeated movements in the upper body\, and the maneuvering of heavy items. The instructor is available to collaborate/accommodate to ensure student safety/comfort. \n \n

SUMMARY:Painting through Print with Karen Lederer
DESCRIPTION:Painting through Print – Karen Lederer \nDates: August 17 – 21\, 2026\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 6 \nLearn to build colorful monoprints using non-toxic\, water-based materials. We will print from watercolor paintings on plexiglass\, plastic stencils\, and water-soluble crayon drawings. With a focus on experimentation\, we will investigate various mark-making techniques and learn to build a rich history of layers into their prints using ghost printing. This class offers a healthier alternative to more traditional oil-based printing\, without sacrificing bold color and texture. \nThis technique is painterly and produces one-of-a-kind prints; editions will not be produced. \n \n

SUMMARY:Printing to Infinity: Creating Repeat Patterns with Elizabeth Castaldo
DESCRIPTION:Printing to Infinity: Creating Repeat Patterns – Elizabeth Castaldo \nDates: August 17 – 21\, 2026\nStudio: Silkscreen\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $125\nClass limit: 6 \nIn this silkscreen workshop we will learn how to turn almost any type of image into an endless repeat pattern and explore the potential of what can be done with repeatable prints. We will go over two ways to create repeatable patterns from your own drawings or photos and cover both analog and digital methods for preparing images for silkscreen printing. \nSilkscreen is a very approachable print medium that allows us to make many multiples of our modular patterns. We will learn the silkscreen printing process from start to finish\, including printing images with multiple colors\, and strategies for both loose and tight registration. Each student will be able to create at least two editions of prints over the course of this week-long class. \nThe resulting prints will be modular components that can be tiled together infinitely (or until you run out of prints!) and used to create large scale wall installations\, wallpaper\, for covering 3D objects\, or use in mixed media artwork. You can extend the skills you learn beyond the class\, as this method of creating a repeat pattern can be applied to other print media as well as digital image making methods. \nOnce you have made an edition of prints we’ll get them up on the wall and strategize creative ways to display them in a space. \nThis concept will be contextualized with examples by artists working with repeat pattern and tessellation such as Lanette Scheeline\, MC Escher and Julia Rothman and examples from the WSW collection. \nThis workshop takes place in our silkscreen studio located on the second floor\, up a flight of stairs. There will be some periods of prolonged standing. \n \n
