SUMMARY:Broadcast Now: publishing as a tool of survival during fascism and genocide with Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo
DESCRIPTION:Broadcast Now: publishing as a tool of survival during fascism and genocide – Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo \nDates: March 28 – 29\, 2026\, 10AM – 4PM\nStudio: Multipurpose Room\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $50 – 300 ($25 – 150\, per day)\nClass limit: 15\, KN95 masks required at all times\, priority to local BIPOC community members \nBroadcast Now: publishing as a tool of survival during fascism and genocide is a two-day workshop hosted by artist\, abolitionist\, and storyteller Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo. We will start by grounding our making in the role of the printed multiple\, publishing\, and broadcasting throughout liberatory history. We’ll learn about the use of leaflets as a dissemination tactic during the dictatorship in Chile\, the Black Panther newspaper printed in Oakland\, CA and mailed nationally\, the Detroit Printing Co-op’s role in making printshops a space for collective use\, and the ways letters and postcards have enabled close dialogue with our incarcerated community. We will then investigate our own relationships to publishing\, and explore how we can collectively incorporate broadcasting into the struggles\, fights\, and work of 2026. Inspired by the long legacy of the printed multiple shaping liberation movements\, participants will craft collective and individual banners\, posters\, and a class newspaper using screenprinting\, creative writing\, xerox\, and risograph printing. This workshop does not require previous printmaking experience. \nParticipants should bring a sketchbook and artwork of their own they might want to work with. Please note\, this class will make use of the photocopier which is located on the second floor up a flight of stairs. This class requires all participants to wear KN95 masks for the duration of the workshop. Masks will be provided. \n \n

SUMMARY:Stencil to Screen: Unlocking the Power of Print with Tyanna Buie
DESCRIPTION:Stencil to Screen: Unlocking the Power of Print – Tyanna Buie \nDates: August 11 – August 15\, 2025\nStudio: Silkscreen (Second Floor\, located up one flight of stairs*)\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab Fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nLet’s get experimental! Discover silkscreen’s flexibility\, exploring the inherent cross-connections and expressive possibilities of photomechanical digital processes\, hand drawn stencils\, found stencils\, mark-making and monotypes. Participants will be prompted to push the boundaries of the processes while creating new ways a screen print is made\, explored\, and considered. \nPrintmaking is a unique way to make images and to think about the construction of images. It emphasizes thinking in layers and processes that value indirect and highly mediated production. This course will focus on the history of screen-printing\, as well as contemporary and non-traditional methods and techniques; such as monotypes\, mono-printing\, collage\, and mixed media. Participants will understand the range of ink options and color mixing\, and the different ways hand-drawn and photomechanical films can be made\, while exploring the versatility of screen-printing to work with non-traditional substrates other than paper. \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a $250 nonrefundable deposit. WSW offers a sliding tuition model for the Summer Art Institute\, and you can pick your desired tuition level from the drop-down menu at check-out. For assistance in selecting your tuition level\, see this guide. If you are in a position to pay full tuition or more\, we request that you do so. SUMMARY:Drypoint with Chine Collé: Multi-Color and Layer with Rie Hasegawa
DESCRIPTION:Drypoint with Chine Collé: Multi-Color and Layer – Rie Hasegawa \nDates: August 11 – August 15\, 2025\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab Fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nDrypoint is an intaglio printmaking technique in which an image is scratched into a metal or plastic plate. The scratches produce a “burr”: a raised portion of metal or plastic that catches and holds ink while the smooth portions of the plate can be wiped clean. With the help of an intaglio printing press\, this ink gets transferred to a dampened sheet of paper. \nThis workshop will demonstrate drypoint techniques either with traditional materials\, copper plate\, rigid vinyl or recycled materials\, and how to ink and transfer images onto paper. Since the image is created by mechanically scratching the surface of the plate\, almost any tool can be used – from traditional drypoint tools\, to sandpaper\, sewing needles\, knives\, etc. Class instruction will also include producing other techniques such as Chine Collé (collage technique in printmaking)\, À la poupée (inking up different colors on a single plate) and multi layers with your drypoints. All techniques are made with non-toxic printmaking materials and processes. SUMMARY:*Ink\, Paper\, and Thread: Artist’s Book Editions with Liz Castaldo
DESCRIPTION:Ink\, Paper\, and Thread: Artist’s Book Editions – Liz Castaldo \nDates: July 28 – August 1\, 2025\nStudio: Silkscreen (Second Floor\, located up one flight of stairs*)\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab Fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nMake your artist’s book dreams a reality in this silkscreen-focused workshop. We will go over how to make several book structures by hand including one page books\, accordion books\, pamphlet bindings\, flexagons and drum leaf bindings. We’ll make one collaborative zine together as a workshop and then participants will spend the rest of the workshop developing\, printing and binding a small edition of artists’ books. The silkscreen printing process will allow us to create multiples of our book pages. Participants will learn how to create hand drawn and digital transparencies\, expose their images to the screen and print several copies of their book pages! \nParticipants can come to the workshop with an idea for their artist’s book in mind but we will also have some time for brainstorming and working through strategies for developing content. The instructor will be available to work with each student to tailor their idea to an appropriate book structure and go over efficient ways to lay out pages for silkscreen printing. We’ll also look at and discuss how content works in different types of book structures and get inspired through artists’ books in the WSW collection. \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a $250 nonrefundable deposit. SUMMARY:*Printing to Infinity: Endless Silkscreen Repeats for Installation with Liz Castaldo
DESCRIPTION:Printing to Infinity: Endless Silkscreen Repeats for Installation – Liz Castaldo \nDates: July 21 – July 25\, 2025\nStudio: Silkscreen (Second Floor\, located up one flight of stairs*)\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab Fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nIn this workshop we will explore the endless possibilities of working with patterns\, and learn how to turn small components into large scale wall installations\, wallpaper\, or even covering three dimensional objects. We’ll cover multiple methods to create repeatable patterns from participants’ own drawings or photos\, that have the potential to be tiled together to create an endless repeat. Participants will also learn the Silkscreen printing process\, which gives us the ability to make many multiples of our modular patterns. We will discuss multiple color printing\, methods for loose and tight registration\, color mixing\, and layering pattern and color on the same print. Once participants have made an edition of prints we’ll get them up on the wall and strategize creative ways to display them and options for attaching prints to the wall. \nWe will contextualize this concept by looking at examples by artists working with repeat pattern and tessellation such as Lanette Scheeline\, MC Escher and Julia Rothman and examples from the WSW collection. \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a $250 nonrefundable deposit. SUMMARY:Trading Stories Through Tile Making: Hybridizing Printmaking and Clay with Dilara Miller
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Dilara Miller\nClass Type: Six-week slab building class\nSkill Level: All Levels\nTime: Thursdays 5 – 7PM\nDates: June 19 – July 24\nMake Up Date: July 31 \nJoin us in this 6-week course where students will create a set of their own hand made tiles and learn to translate printmaking techniques to transform clay surfaces. In this class\, Dilara Miller will instruct participants in slab building tiles\, and guide them in preparing their surface to transfer a repetitive or large scale image over multiple tiles. Attendees will learn how to incorporate sgraffito and intaglio techniques onto their clay surface to create a unique array of tiles that can be puzzled together. Dilara uses these techniques in her own work\, drawing inspiration from Byzantine and Ottoman iconography. She utilizes the tiles as novel artifacts\, taking rubbings of the tiles to create a remnant of the object. By the end of the workshop students will have a set of fired tiles to keep\, and they will also take rubbings of each others’ tiles. \nRegister today for an outdoor clay adventure! Take advantage of the inspiring golden hours to express yourself creatively during our Plein Air Pottery sessions at WSW. While we work on our new and improved studio\, our ceramic program is setting up camp on the back deck outside of the silkscreen studio! In case of inclement weather: the outdoor space is shaded in the afternoon and evening and has a covering adequate to provide shelter from light rain.

SUMMARY:Mokuhanga and Emakimono: Two Week Course in Woodblock Printing and Scroll Making
DESCRIPTION:Mokuhanga and Emakimono: Two Week Course in Woodblock Printing and Scroll Making – Yoonmi Nam and Katie Baldwin \nDates: August 5 – August 16\, 2024\nStudio: Intaglio and Silkscreen\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $700 – $2400\nLab fee: $150\nClass limit: 12 \nIn this two-week course\, participants will immerse themselves in the process of learning Mokuhanga and Emakimono. Mokuhanga is Japanese-style water-based woodblock printing and Emakimono is the term for a horizontal Japanese handscroll with pictures. \nThis workshop will be an introduction to the printing process mokuhanga\, which uses water-based pigments (or sumi ink)\, a kento registration method\, and hand printing with a baren. Participants will learn about tools and materials\, and the carving and printing methods associated with this process. All participants will have the opportunity to carve and print two projects: a single-block and a multiple-block. One of the wonderful aspects of this process is that it does not require a press or a large workspace and it is non-toxic! \nThe printed single-block edition will be exchanged amongst the members of the class and used to create an Emakimono\, a traditional Japanese scroll with a sequence of narrative images. Using traditional fabric and paper mounting techniques\, participants will learn how to connect multiple mokuhanga prints together to create a continuous horizontal image in a handscroll structure. \nIn order to reserve your space in this two week course\, we require a $300 nonrefundable deposit. WSW offers a sliding tuition model for the Summer Art Institute\, and you can pick your desired tuition level from the drop-down menu at check-out. If you are in a position to pay full tuition or more\, we request that you do so. The pay-as-you-can model is not based on tax returns or documentation\, rather your self-determined capacity to pay. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here. \nThis workshop partially takes place in our silkscreen studio\, which is located on the second floor up a flight of stairs. \n  \n

SUMMARY:What's still good about yesterday's liberation?: Feminist Criticism and Construction in the WSW Archives with Jeanne Vaccaro
DESCRIPTION:What’s still good about yesterday’s liberation?: Feminist Criticism and Construction in the WSW Archives – Jeanne Vaccaro \nDates: July 29 – August 2\, 2024\nStudio: Archive\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $350-$1200\nLab fee: $75\nClass limit: 6 \nThis workshop moves between two concepts: criticism and construction. What is criticism for\, exactly\, and how can it be harnessed to build movements on top of movements? Rather than think of criticism as destructive we will consider and practice forms of collective inquiry. Anchored in the WSW Feminist Criticism workshop of 1987\, some readings and horizontal style classroom lectures will be provided on the politics of feminist citationality\, lesbian bibliography\, political organizing within library and information systems\, and how identity politics and knowledge production go hand in hand. We will have a chance to learn about and use the WSW archive and produce a takeaway based on our collective research. Hands-on exercises\, free writing\, rewrites\, and collage will be incorporated. Many archival documents including video will be on offer. The class will have the opportunity to collectively curate a capsule exhibition based on their research and learning experience\, which will remain on display in the WSW library display case through the Summer Art Institute in August. Open to all\, no specialized experience necessary. \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a $150 nonrefundable deposit. \nThis workshop takes place in our Archive\, which is located on the second floor up a flight of stairs. \nThis course is currently full.
