To Our Community:

In our 50th year of service to artists, we take a moment to pause and reflect on our recent years, and look towards the future of Women’s Studio Workshop and the changes to come. At the beginning of February, Co-Executive Director Erin Zona announced her decision to leave Women’s Studio Workshop. Recognizing this as an opportunity for both personal and institutional transformation, Co-Executive Director Lauren V. Walling has decided to step down as Executive Director as well. She will continue to support Women’s Studio Workshop in our campus expansion and to maintain the fiscal health of the organization through the transition. On April 13th, Women’s Studio Workshop’s beloved Chili Bowl Fest Fundraiser returns–and for the first time since 2020, *EACH CERAMIC PURCHASE WILL COME WITH A FREE SERVING OF CHILI!*

For over a quarter century, guests have enjoyed this celebration of community and ceramics–shopping from over 1,000 handmade bowls, mugs, and tumblers, with all of the proceeds of the sale going to support WSW’s artistic programming. This year, we will be hosting both an online and in-person sale!

The In-Person Sale will take place from 2-7PM at Women’s Studio Workshop! We are so happy to see Chili Bowl return home to 722 Binnewater Lane in Rosendale after years of being held at other locations.

2-4PM: Early admission $10
4-7PM: Free!

Live music all day from The Library Band! Overflow parking is available at the Rail Trail parking lot on Binnewater Rd, and there will be a shuttle from that parking lot to our campus. See you there!

The Online Sale will open at 10AM on April 13th. In addition to over 200 handmade bowls for sale, we will be raffling off work! Each piece will be double-boxed, carefully packaged with recyclable materials, and mailed directly to your door for ultimate safety and ease. Be sure to bookmark the page and set your alarms, because these bowls will sell out fast!

West Coast friends! Join curator Maymanah Farhat @

West Coast friends! Join curator Maymanah Farhat @maymanah2.0 on Saturday March 16th from 1 - 3pm at @sanfranciscocenterforthebook to discuss the exhibition A Radical Alteration, share some of her favorite pieces on display, and answer questions about her research at the Women’s Studio Workshop archive. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear about Maymanah’s process and how collaboration with our organization informed certain curatorial choices.

Here are Farhat's reflections on one of the books in the show -- @tona_wilson’s Stories Behind Bars: “Several of the artists’ books in A Radical Alteration recount the stories of people who have been detained or incarcerated in the U.S., from the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II to the more recent detention of migrants. Tona Wilson’s Stories Behind Bars (2010) is a printed series based on her work as a Spanish interpreter in American courts. Each silkscreened booklet contains texts and images that describe the experiences of people who have been arrested for immigration violations, such as pregnant women who have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum or farmworkers who live and work in deplorable conditions yet fear deportation due to their lack of a legal immigration status. The gravity of these situations is contextualized as part of the larger prison industrial complex, as Wilson uses graphics and excerpts from various sources (what appear to be reports, news articles, and scholarly books) in order to highlight the fact that detained immigrants are the fastest growing prison population in the country. This powerful work is one of several artists’ books that @wsworkshop has supported over the years that shed light on neglected communities and obscured histories. These projects reveal the callousness of certain policies, the dark histories that we, as Americans, still need to contend with, and how artists can intervene in dominant narratives. Above all, these artists’ books demonstrate the power of advocacy and the profound acts of solidarity (and empathy) that arts organizations can facilitate.”

We want to wish a warm welcome to our newest resident artist, Mikayla Patton @mikaylapatton.art
Mikayla Patton (b. Pine Ridge Reservation) is an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Nation and mixed media artist. Through the interplay of recycled paper-making and earth elements, Patton creates sculptural objects that explore Indigenous intimacies, personal narratives, and the transformative power of repurposing materials. While utilizing her Lakota knowledge of creative methodologies and adornment, Patton aims to address shared themes of healing, growth, and renewal.
In 2019, Patton obtained a BFA with a focus in Printmaking from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her work exhibited at the Texas Tech School of Art (Lubbock); All My Relations Gallery (Minneapolis); and the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans. Patton has been mentioned in Hand Papermaking Magazine, First American Art, and Pasatiempo. She received fellowships, awards and residencies through the Roswell A-I-R Program; Ucross Foundation; The Studios at Mass MoCA; First Peoples Fund; Native Arts and Culture Foundation; and is a 2023 Joan Mitchell Fellow. Patton is currently living and working on the east coast.

Women’s Studio Workshop is hosting a print actio

Women’s Studio Workshop is hosting a print action for Palestine on Saturday March 9th from 12-3pm!

We will have screens set up for shirts and a sheet of postcards with a graphic by the incredible Liz Castaldo (@ecastaldo_artandbooks ) who is currently in residence. Bring your own t-shirt or piece of fabric (light colors work best!), and we’ll have extras for you! Walk away with a shirt, a sheet of postcards, and a list with mailing addresses for local representatives.

Our silkscreen studio is located on the second floor up a flight of stairs. Masks are encouraged but not required, and we will have a box of N95s available.
