SUMMARY:Printing to Infinity: Creating Repeat Patterns with Elizabeth Castaldo
DESCRIPTION:Printing to Infinity: Creating Repeat Patterns – Elizabeth Castaldo \nDates: August 17 – 21\, 2026\nStudio: Silkscreen\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $125\nClass limit: 6 \nIn this silkscreen workshop we will learn how to turn almost any type of image into an endless repeat pattern and explore the potential of what can be done with repeatable prints. We will go over two ways to create repeatable patterns from your own drawings or photos and cover both analog and digital methods for preparing images for silkscreen printing. \nSilkscreen is a very approachable print medium that allows us to make many multiples of our modular patterns. We will learn the silkscreen printing process from start to finish\, including printing images with multiple colors\, and strategies for both loose and tight registration. Each student will be able to create at least two editions of prints over the course of this week-long class. \nThe resulting prints will be modular components that can be tiled together infinitely (or until you run out of prints!) and used to create large scale wall installations\, wallpaper\, for covering 3D objects\, or use in mixed media artwork. You can extend the skills you learn beyond the class\, as this method of creating a repeat pattern can be applied to other print media as well as digital image making methods. \nOnce you have made an edition of prints we’ll get them up on the wall and strategize creative ways to display them in a space. \nThis concept will be contextualized with examples by artists working with repeat pattern and tessellation such as Lanette Scheeline\, MC Escher and Julia Rothman and examples from the WSW collection. \nThis workshop takes place in our silkscreen studio located on the second floor\, up a flight of stairs. There will be some periods of prolonged standing. \nThis workshop is currently full. To be added to the waitlist\, email info@wsworkshop.org. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Painting through Print with Karen Lederer
DESCRIPTION:Painting through Print – Karen Lederer \nDates: August 17 – 21\, 2026\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 6 \nLearn to build colorful monoprints using non-toxic\, water-based materials. We will print from watercolor paintings on plexiglass\, plastic stencils\, and water-soluble crayon drawings. With a focus on experimentation\, we will investigate various mark-making techniques and learn to build a rich history of layers into their prints using ghost printing. This class offers a healthier alternative to more traditional oil-based printing\, without sacrificing bold color and texture. \nThis technique is painterly and produces one-of-a-kind prints; editions will not be produced. \nThis workshop is currently full. To be added to the waitlist\, email info@wsworkshop.org. \n

SUMMARY:Maximalize Your Prints: Variable Editions in Silkscreen with Elizabeth Castaldo
DESCRIPTION:Maximalize Your Prints: Variable Editions in Silkscreen – Elizabeth Castaldo \nDates: August 10 – 14\, 2026\nStudio: Silkscreen\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $125\nClass limit: 6 \nIn this silkscreen workshop we will explore ways to bring variety and spontaneity into printed editions. In variable editions\, each print features imagery that is repeated\, but with some alterations from print to print. Using silkscreen\, which allows us to create editioned multiples relatively easily\, we’ll mix things up\, going over several ways to print variations on images and then layering them up to create multi-layered colorful unique prints and variable editions. \nYou’ll learn the silkscreen printing process from start to finish and then experiment with several ways to bring unique and varied elements into your prints. We will go over how to use paper and vinyl stencils\, masking fluid\, double exposure\, and monotype techniques which will allow us to alter the images on the screen as we are printing and approach the printing process in an intuitive and spontaneous way. \nBy using personal drawings or photos\, we will cover ways to prepare images for silkscreen using both analog and digital methods. We will go over approaches for composing multiple color prints\, registration methods\, color mixing\, and layering image\, pattern and color in the same print. \nDepending on your goals for your work\, we will make at least one small variable edition or several unique prints over the course of the week. \nThis concept will be contextualized with examples by artists working with variable and layered imagery and examples from the WSW collection. \nThis workshop takes place in our silkscreen studio located on the second floor\, up a flight of stairs. There will be some periods of prolonged standing. \n \n

SUMMARY:I Love Your Layers with Shelley Thorstensen
DESCRIPTION:I Love Your Layers – Shelley Thorstensen \nDates: August 10 – 14\, 2026\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 6 \nLet’s get closer to the place where people say\, “I love your layers\,” and create seamless\, surprising work together. In this workshop\, we’ll focus on proofing—making beautiful versions of your image so you\, the artist\, can choose which ones to edition. Thorstensen says\, “This is at the heart of how I work\, and I’m excited to share both systematic tips I’ve learned over the years and intuitive approaches tailored to each student.” \nBring a small plate (about 8 x 10″ to 9 x 12″) you’ve worked on\, and feel free to make quick plates (collograph\, relief\, litho) to supplement it. The class will focus on layering and printing\, giving you plenty of hands-on experience with the creative process. While participants won’t be learning new plate-making techniques\, Thorstensen will be present to advise and support you in your plate-making endeavors\, offering feedback and suggestions as you work. \nA materials list will be provided to help you prepare. For now\, find or create a plate you want to use and start a Pinterest-style wish list or mood board of things you love—color\, form\, ideas\, anything that inspires you. Bring it along\, and we’ll jump off from there. \nAs you will need to bring premade plates\, previous experience with printmaking is required. There will be some periods of prolonged standing. \nThis workshop is currently full. To be added to the waitlist\, please email info@wsworkshop.org \n

DESCRIPTION:Riso Ephemera: Printing the Day – Emily Larned \nDates: July 6 – 10\, 2026\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $100\nClass limit: 6 \nOriginally denoting a plant that lives only a single day\, ephemera means both “things of no lasting significance” (Merriam Webster) as well as a subset of those things which become rare\, covetable\, and significant because of their expendable nature and their inextricable link to a specific moment in time. \nIn this workshop you will create a personal collection of riso-printed ephemera by tending to your daily experience and the potentialities of your ever-updating present. You will: 1) gain familiarization with the various functions and possibilities of the riso; 2) explore various print formats through hands-on making; 3) survey a wide range of riso printed examples brought to class as well as ephemera housed in the WSW Archives; 4) cultivate your artistic attention and creative response through prompts\, readings\, and attention practices. In attending to the now and now and now\, you will collaborate with paper\, the riso\, and the contents of each day as a vital way of life: responding to the moment through making. Suitable for both beginners to risography and the book arts\, as well as those who wish to deepen their printing and publishing practice. \nThis workshop takes place in our silkscreen studio located on the second floor\, up a flight of stairs. \nThis workshop is currently full. To be added to the waitlist\, email info@wsworkshop.org.

SUMMARY:Stencil to Screen: Unlocking the Power of Print with Tyanna Buie
DESCRIPTION:Stencil to Screen: Unlocking the Power of Print – Tyanna Buie \nDates: August 11 – August 15\, 2025\nStudio: Silkscreen (Second Floor\, located up one flight of stairs*)\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab Fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nLet’s get experimental! Discover silkscreen’s flexibility\, exploring the inherent cross-connections and expressive possibilities of photomechanical digital processes\, hand drawn stencils\, found stencils\, mark-making and monotypes. Participants will be prompted to push the boundaries of the processes while creating new ways a screen print is made\, explored\, and considered. \nPrintmaking is a unique way to make images and to think about the construction of images. It emphasizes thinking in layers and processes that value indirect and highly mediated production. This course will focus on the history of screen-printing\, as well as contemporary and non-traditional methods and techniques; such as monotypes\, mono-printing\, collage\, and mixed media. Participants will understand the range of ink options and color mixing\, and the different ways hand-drawn and photomechanical films can be made\, while exploring the versatility of screen-printing to work with non-traditional substrates other than paper. \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a $250 nonrefundable deposit. WSW offers a sliding tuition model for the Summer Art Institute\, and you can pick your desired tuition level from the drop-down menu at check-out. For assistance in selecting your tuition level\, see this guide. If you are in a position to pay full tuition or more\, we request that you do so. The pay-as-you-can model is not based on tax returns or documentation\, rather your self-determined capacity to pay. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here. \n*Any questions regarding accessibility\, please call our office at (845)658-9133 or email info@wsworkshop.org.

SUMMARY:Drypoint with Chine Collé: Multi-Color and Layer with Rie Hasegawa
DESCRIPTION:Drypoint with Chine Collé: Multi-Color and Layer – Rie Hasegawa \nDates: August 11 – August 15\, 2025\nStudio: Intaglio\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab Fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nDrypoint is an intaglio printmaking technique in which an image is scratched into a metal or plastic plate. The scratches produce a “burr”: a raised portion of metal or plastic that catches and holds ink while the smooth portions of the plate can be wiped clean. With the help of an intaglio printing press\, this ink gets transferred to a dampened sheet of paper. \nThis workshop will demonstrate drypoint techniques either with traditional materials\, copper plate\, rigid vinyl or recycled materials\, and how to ink and transfer images onto paper. Since the image is created by mechanically scratching the surface of the plate\, almost any tool can be used – from traditional drypoint tools\, to sandpaper\, sewing needles\, knives\, etc. Class instruction will also include producing other techniques such as Chine Collé (collage technique in printmaking)\, À la poupée (inking up different colors on a single plate) and multi layers with your drypoints. All techniques are made with non-toxic printmaking materials and processes. SUMMARY:*Printing to Infinity: Endless Silkscreen Repeats for Installation with Liz Castaldo
DESCRIPTION:Printing to Infinity: Endless Silkscreen Repeats for Installation – Liz Castaldo \nDates: July 21 – July 25\, 2025\nStudio: Silkscreen (Second Floor\, located up one flight of stairs*)\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab Fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nIn this workshop we will explore the endless possibilities of working with patterns\, and learn how to turn small components into large scale wall installations\, wallpaper\, or even covering three dimensional objects. We’ll cover multiple methods to create repeatable patterns from participants’ own drawings or photos\, that have the potential to be tiled together to create an endless repeat. Participants will also learn the Silkscreen printing process\, which gives us the ability to make many multiples of our modular patterns. We will discuss multiple color printing\, methods for loose and tight registration\, color mixing\, and layering pattern and color on the same print. Once participants have made an edition of prints we’ll get them up on the wall and strategize creative ways to display them and options for attaching prints to the wall. \nWe will contextualize this concept by looking at examples by artists working with repeat pattern and tessellation such as Lanette Scheeline\, MC Escher and Julia Rothman and examples from the WSW collection. \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a $250 nonrefundable deposit. DESCRIPTION:Risograph Structures – Caroline Kern \nDates: July 14– July 18\, 2025\nStudio: Silkscreen (Second Floor\, located up one flight of stairs*)\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab Fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nIs it a book? Is it a sculpture? Could it be both? Come learn the basics of Risograph while also experimenting with structure and form through folded paper! In this workshop we will go over the basics of the Risograph machine\, a brief history of stencil duplicators (Risograph)\, and experiment with folded forms to help participants wrap their minds around how to plan\, design\, and then print their sculptural books. Templates will be provided to participants prior to the workshop\, though participants can work on their own designs if they like. This workshop is for both newbies\, as well participants who have used stencil duplicators before\, and for anyone who would like to create books that break out of traditional formats\, and/or are into creating paper sculptures without a narrative. Participants will complete a small edition of their projects and leave with a basic foundation of one to two color Risograph printing\, as well as basic paper folding technique.

SUMMARY:Mokuhanga and Emakimono: Two Week Course in Woodblock Printing and Scroll Making
DESCRIPTION:Mokuhanga and Emakimono: Two Week Course in Woodblock Printing and Scroll Making – Yoonmi Nam and Katie Baldwin \nDates: August 5 – August 16\, 2024\nStudio: Intaglio and Silkscreen\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $700 – $2400\nLab fee: $150\nClass limit: 12 \nIn this two-week course\, participants will immerse themselves in the process of learning Mokuhanga and Emakimono. Mokuhanga is Japanese-style water-based woodblock printing and Emakimono is the term for a horizontal Japanese handscroll with pictures. \nThis workshop will be an introduction to the printing process mokuhanga\, which uses water-based pigments (or sumi ink)\, a kento registration method\, and hand printing with a baren. Participants will learn about tools and materials\, and the carving and printing methods associated with this process. All participants will have the opportunity to carve and print two projects: a single-block and a multiple-block. One of the wonderful aspects of this process is that it does not require a press or a large workspace and it is non-toxic! \nThe printed single-block edition will be exchanged amongst the members of the class and used to create an Emakimono\, a traditional Japanese scroll with a sequence of narrative images. Using traditional fabric and paper mounting techniques\, participants will learn how to connect multiple mokuhanga prints together to create a continuous horizontal image in a handscroll structure. \nIn order to reserve your space in this two week course\, we require a $300 nonrefundable deposit. WSW offers a sliding tuition model for the Summer Art Institute\, and you can pick your desired tuition level from the drop-down menu at check-out. If you are in a position to pay full tuition or more\, we request that you do so. The pay-as-you-can model is not based on tax returns or documentation\, rather your self-determined capacity to pay. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here. \nThis workshop partially takes place in our silkscreen studio\, which is located on the second floor up a flight of stairs. \n  \n
