Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here. \n\n\nThis course acquaints students with a wide range of screen-printing techniques and approaches using a variety of water-based inks and experimental materials. Participants will discover the medium’s flexibility\, exploring the inherent cross-connections and expressive possibilities of photomechanical\, screen stencil\, monotype\, and digital processes. \nPrintmaking is a unique way to make images and to think about the construction of images. It emphasizes thinking in layers and processes that value indirect and highly mediated production. This course will focus on the history of screen-printing\, as well as contemporary and non-traditional methods and techniques; such as monotypes\, mono-printing\, collage\, and mixed media. Participants will gain an understanding of ink options and color mixing\, and the different ways hand-drawn and photomechanical films can be made\, while exploring the versatility of screen-printing and working with substrates other than paper. \n\n

Participants will gain a working knowledge of preparing\, degreasing\, etching the plate along with the printing process itself. We will create multiple plates covering electro-line\, electro-tint\, open bite\, electro-graphite\, soft ground\, and electro-galvanizing with embossment. Experimenting with different resists\, we will also cover grounds including BIG and salt etching techniques. \nBy the end of the week\, participants will feel confident enough to set up an electro-etching tank in their own studio and continue their experimental electro-etching practice.

For the first time\, the Women’s Studio Workshop is offering a class to explore screen-printing in Spanish.  \nWith screen-printing\, you can easily produce multiples and experiment with graphic color\, text\, and imagery. In this course\, participants will be introduced to the basic techniques of screen-printing – including how to use hand-drawn or photo-based stencils\, how to apply multiple colors and layers\, and how to print on paper or fabric. Participants will select their own themes and content for their prints while receiving technical assistance as well as guidance in the elements of graphic design and artistic feedback to strengthen their designs. No experience is necessary! \n\n
