SUMMARY:Let's Make Hanji: Korean Papermaking - Aimee Lee
DESCRIPTION:Let’s Make Hanji: Korean Papermaking – Aimee Lee \nDates: July 26 – 30\, 2021\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $300-$1200\nLab fee: $75 \nClass Limit:5 \nClick here for Materials List \nEnrollment for this class is full. To be placed on the waitlist\, please email info@wsworkshop.org or call 845-658-9133. \n \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a deposit. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here. \nThis is a class all about making and manipulating Korean paper\, known as hanji. Participants will work together to process raw paper mulberry bark into pulp. We will then make paper in the classical version of hanji\, from a suspended bamboo screen. Participants will transform bark into bark lace and thread for future fiber\, sculpture\, and book applications. Hanji made in Korea will be available to fuse and texture (joomchi)\, cord and twine (jiseung)\, and spin into thread to weave (shifu). Alongside the folklore of hanji\, Aimee will share her hybrid methods of using this strong and versatile material. This is an ideal course for students interested in East Asian paper traditions\, paper’s role in material culture\, and hands-on experience of manual labor and patience that result in luminous paper. \n\n

SUMMARY:Excavated Surface: Experiments in Handmade Paper - Sue Carrie Drummond
DESCRIPTION:[asp_product id=”35272″] \n  \nMaterials List \nThis class will cover the basics of papermaking with an emphasis on surface exploration. We will focus on methods to create imagery within the sheet covering techniques related to embedding\, watermarking\, and blowouts. Participants are encouraged to experiment as they consider multiple approaches to each process working with stencils\, dimensional drawing\, and even physical objects to create images and leave impressions. The product from this class may range from stacks of experimental sheets\, to a series folio editions\, or pieces that may be developed further through drawing and printmaking outside the workshop. \nStudents will learn how to beat paper\, proper sheet formation\, and how to work with pigments. They will learn to use overbeaten fibers and explore a range of different drying methods. We will also discuss alternative methods of working for those participants who do not have easy access to a professional paper studio.

SUMMARY:Fresh Cuttings - Bhavna Mehta
DESCRIPTION:Fresh Cuttings – Bhavna Mehta \nDates: August 5-9\, 2019\nStudio: Papermaking\nClass limit: 6\nTuition: $750 members / $800 non-members\nLab fee: $75 \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a $300 deposit. \n\n\nThis class is currently full. To inquire about the waitlist\, please call (845) 658-9133 or email info@wsworkshop.org\n\n  \nMaterials List \nThe flatness of paper will serve as an inviting platform for transformation. This workshop will consist of two main activities – making paper and cutting paper. Students will use simple papercutting techniques to create a fan accordion book in a collaborative environment. Paying attention to color\, shape\, pattern and texture\, students will focus on the process of taking an idea and visually translating it. We will develop a narrative sculpture in the form of a book. Making paper in the beginning of the class will yield handmade paper to make sculptural work by cutting and folding that paper. Experience with paper cutting is helpful\, but not required.

SUMMARY:No Sheets Required – Objects in Pulp - Fafnir Adamites
DESCRIPTION:[asp_product id=”35260″] \n  \nMaterials List \nThis workshop will focus entirely on the sculptural possibilities of paper pulp. Starting with simple armature construction methods\, students will learn how to take paper from 2D to 3D in this hands-on workshop. Materials such as wire\, reed\, string and mesh will be used as armatures to support paper pulp like abaca and cotton. A number of casting methods will be introduced\, including dipping\, casting pulp around found objects and creating molds in clay. Emphasis will be on experimentation\, understanding the inherent qualities of the materials\, and strategies for building volume with paper pulp. Students will explore the sculptural impact of repetition\, texture and surface design like stitching. This workshop is perfect for beginners or experienced sculptors looking for new ways to express themselves in 3 dimensions.

SUMMARY:Large Scale Paper Pour - Hong Hong
DESCRIPTION:[asp_product id=”35251″] \n  \nMaterials List \nA hybrid of and an expansion upon Nagashizuki and Nepalese papermaking\, the large-scale paper pour is an active\, outdoor process that generates sheets of paper spanning more than ninety-six square feet. During this workshop\, students will first collaborate with instructor to make a 12 ft x 8 ft sheet of paper using a modular mould and deckle. Fundamentals of a large-scale paper pour\, such as pulp preparation\, will be introduced. Students will then build their own large-scale mould\, and use it to explore large-scale patternmaking and mark-making techniques\, such as spraying\, dripping\, sprinkling\, wet collaging and embedding. At the end of the workshop\, students will take home their own big paper\, as well as the knowledge and skills necessary to start making giant paper in their own backyards. \n\n Resident Artist Hong Hong teaches the Morgan’s Summer 2017 Interns techniques used in creating her signature large-scale paper pours.
