SUMMARY:Many Hands: Collaborative Pulp Painting with Kelly Taylor Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Many Hands: Collaborative Pulp Painting – Kelly Taylor Mitchell \nDates: August 17 – 21\, 2026\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nMany Hands is a pulp painting workshop that emphasizes collaborative process. This workshop challenges the notion of an isolated artist practice and alternatively invites participants to work together to create a large-scale collaborative handmade paperwork. This collaborative papermaking project will center improvisation and intuition as aesthetic guides. We will look to artists and writers who articulate the power of prioritizing the act\, the feeling\, and the experience of doing over a fixation on outcomes. Tools like prompt-based free writing\, reading and discussion will support our collaborative and process orientated exploration. Overbeaten linen and flax fibers will be used to explore techniques in pigmentation\, sheet formation and various pulp painting techniques. This workshop is a great fit for artists who want to explore not just papermaking\, but the creative process. It is essential that participants are eager and open to collaboration. \nPapermaking is a wet process; participants should be prepared with waterproof or water-safe shoes and clothing. This workshop will involve prolonged periods of standing\, often requiring repeated movements in the upper body\, and the maneuvering of heavy items. The instructor is available to collaborate/accommodate to ensure student safety/comfort. \nThis workshop is currently full. To be added to the waitlist\, email info@wsworkshop.org. \n

SUMMARY:Southern Fiber Lab with Kelly Taylor Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Southern Fiber Lab – Kelly Taylor Mitchell \nDates: August 10 – 14\, 2026\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nSouthern Fiber Lab is an experimental and exploratory workshop where site specific plant matter becomes paper. You will learn how to cook and process foraged fibers with southern roots like kudzu\, spanish moss and plantain. The resulting pulp will act as the basis for introductory sheet formation processes like double couching\, inclusions\, and blowouts. An expanded notion of the south\, that engages a diasporic lens and looks within and beyond the United States will be explored in the class through reading\, discussion and material play. You’re encouraged to bring\, for use as inclusions in your papermaking\, southern fibers; with both “southern” and “fiber” being self defined. For example\, this may include plant matter\, ephemera\, textiles\, etc. To be added to the waitlist\, please email info@wsworkshop.org \n

SUMMARY:Veils\, Layers\, Illusions with Jaz Graf
DESCRIPTION:Veils\, Layers\, Illusions – Jaz Graf \nDates: July 6 – 10\, 2026\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $450 – $1300\nLab fee: $150\nClass limit: 6 \nWorking with mulberry\, cotton and overbeaten abaca fibers\, we will explore light\, layering and illusions in handmade paper. Stencils will be used as masks and for blowouts\, a process of using water spray to create unique shapes in pulp. We will consider combinations of opacity and translucency through double-couching\, and embedding materials between layers of pulp. A deckle box offers possibilities to integrate inclusions and ombre effects. We will use a forced air restraint stack dryer to flatten sheets\, while embracing the natural cockle and textured surfaces inherent to mixing fibers which shrink at different rates. Come with an open mind\, patience for abaca to drain\, and a passion for process. All levels. \nPapermaking is a wet process; participants should be prepared with waterproof or water-safe shoes and clothing. This workshop will involve prolonged periods of standing\, often requiring repeated movements in the upper body\, and the maneuvering of heavy items. \nThis workshop is currently full. SUMMARY:Handmade Paper and Encaustic with Laura Moriarty
DESCRIPTION:Handmade Paper and Encaustic – Laura Moriarty \nDates: July 31 – August 4\, 2023\nStudio: Papermaking and R&F\nTuition: Members $775\, Nonmembers $825\nLab fee: $75\nClass limit: 7 \nThis class is currently full. If you’d like to be added to our waitlist please email info@wsworkshop.org or call 845-658-9133. \nJoin WSW in collaboration with R&F Handmade Paints in Kingston as we explore combining handmade paper and encaustic. During the first two and a half days\, participants will work in WSW’s papermaking studio\, using cotton\, kozo and other natural ArtFarm fibers. Students will be encouraged to develop a series of works as they learn the basics of sheet forming\, collaging\, embedding\, stenciling\, pulp painting\, and embossing. Our focus will be to work experimentally\, thinking about how to best use the qualities of each fiber for subsequent combining with encaustic\, leaving ‘room’ for more to happen. \nAfter lunch on Wednesday\, we will travel to R&F Handmade Paints\, where we will work in their encaustic studio\, using our handmade papers as the starting point for unique mixed-media works with wax. After Laura leads an introduction to basic encaustic painting techniques\, students will continue to develop their individual series. Experimentation and invention will be encouraged\, and a variety of techniques will be introduced\, including dipping\, lamination\, collage\, inscribing\, image transfer\, and mixed media applications. The emphasis will be to use encaustic to enhance the special characteristics of our handmade paper\, and tell a more layered story. \nIn order to reserve your space in the class\, we require a deposit. From the drop down menu below\, please select your desired tuition level. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis\, and you can read about our refund and cancellation policies here.

SUMMARY:Dimensional Pulp: Sculptural Papermaking
DESCRIPTION:Dimensional Pulp: Sculptural Papermaking – Fafnir Adamites \nDates: July 11 – 15\, 2022\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $300-$1200\nLab fee: $75\nClass limit: 8 \nRegistration for this workshop is full. If you would like to be put on the waitlist\, please email info@wsworkshop.org or call our office at 845-658-9133. \nClick Here for Materials List \nThis workshop will give students an opportunity to fully explore the dimensional possibilities of paper pulp – without having to pull sheets. Experimentation will be encouraged as a way to understand and appreciate the inherent fragility\, strength\, texture and skin-like properties of abaca and cotton pulp. Demonstrations and discussions on contemporary paper artists will be incorporated as well as how to continue working with pulp in your own studio\, without expensive tools or equipment. In the studio we will explore materials and strategies of making simple armatures out of wire\, reed and found objects as a basis for dipping and casting. Surface design and assemblage techniques will be utilized to create sculptural forms that are figurative\, abstract\, and at times wonderfully unpredictable. \n

SUMMARY:Dimensional Pulp: Sculptural Papermaking (Section 2)
DESCRIPTION:Dimensional Pulp: Sculptural Papermaking – Fafnir Adamites \nDates: July 4 – 8\, 2022\nStudio: Papermaking\nTuition: Sliding Scale\, $300-$1200\nLab fee: $75\nClass limit: 8 \nRegistration for this workshop is full. \nPlease note: This workshop will be happening the week before SAI officially begins. As a result lunches / meals will NOT be available this week. There will be no other workshops happening at the same time as this workshop\, so it will be a little bit of a different experience than our typical SAI classes. \n\n
