Pochoir with Karen Lederer

July 13 - July 22

| $200 – $225

Pochoir with Karen Lederer
Dates: July 13, 15, 20, 22 7-8:30 PM EST
Tuition: $200 members/ $225 non-members
Class limit: 12

This class will begin with an investigation into collage. We will discuss the history of the medium and look at “Jazz,” an iconic pochoir print project by Henri Matisse. Students will make many collage studies working both with an abstract and representational visual language. We will play with various ways of breaking up paper from tearing to scissors and also experiment with creating our own materials by painting the paper just as Matisse did for his cut-outs. Then students will pick their favorite collage and learn to translate it into a pochoir print. Pochoir is a form a printmaking that does not require a press. One stipples paint through homemade stencils onto paper. The end product has a distinct velvety texture and luminous color different from what can be achieved by any other painting and printmaking techniques. We will finish the class with an optional print postcard exchange.

Materials needed:

  • Gouache paint
  • Stencil brushes (brushes with a flat top)
  • Paint brushes
  • Scissors
  • Paper
  • Exacto Knife
  • Glue
  • Mylar (ideally but anything can really be used for stencil material)

Please note that we have not provided any specifics of brand/type for these materials. The instructor hopes that you will be able to participate in the class with whatever supplies you already have at home, and therefore did not want to limit options by being too specific. If you are in need of direction, feel free to reach out.
