This workshop will focus on texture and dimensional form as they relate to the papermaking process. Using experimental casting methods rooted in fiber properties and hand papermaking processes, participants will learn how to capture degrees of dimensionality with paper pulp. Beginning with basic papermaking techniques such as fiber processing and sheet formation, participants will apply these skills to a variety of non-traditional paper casting techniques such as embossing, hand packed plaster moulds, carved plywood moulds, found moulds, and laminate casting with high shrinkage fibers. This experimental workshop will emphasize the unique nature of paper as a casting medium through a wide exploration of this material. This course will cover ways of working that are applicable to both professional and improvisational studio practices.
