Join WSW for an unforgettable art experience at Rua Reidh Lighthouse, at one of the most dramatic and remote locations on the north-west coast of Scotland. This printmaking workshop will be held from June 14 – 22nd, 2023,  eight of the longest days of the year, when the light at the lighthouse doesn’t set until after 11 pm.

About the Workshop

In this workshop we’ll take a cue from our location and examine how self-imposed boundaries in different contexts shape us as individuals and how that defines/inspires/and limits our work. We’ll consciously try to break these constraints as we create new work in response to our immediate environment. Our inspiration will be the natural world surrounding us. This class is perfect for artists of any skill level who want to push beyond, and enrich their visual vocabulary.

Participants will be introduced to low-tech printmaking methods, easily adaptable to any working style. Students will work on and off the press to construct their images using drypoint (an intaglio printmaking technique in which an image is scratched into a plastic plate), collagraph (cardboard plate), monoprint, trace monotype and chine-collé. During the workshop, short demonstrations will introduce different printmaking techniques, most of them easily adaptable to home studio without the press.

While most days will be spent working in the studio, we’ll take a Saturday excursion to visit the fabulous new Gairloch Museum, the GALE Centre where students can browse goods from local artisans, and the unforgettable Inverewe Gardens, ending our day with dinner at The Barn.

About the Location and Accommodations

Rua Reidh Lighthouse is near Gairloch in Wester Ross, standing at the entrance to Loch Ewe, with breath-taking views across the Minch to the Isle of Skye, the Shiant Isles and the Outer Hebrides. There are three room-types available at a variety of price points: a single-occupancy bedroom on the first floor, a shared bedroom on the first floor, and two shared bedrooms with an ocean view on the second floor. These rooms are reserved on a first-come-first-served basis; please choose your room-type from the drop down menu when you register.

We’ll have time to explore the rugged, dramatic area around the lighthouse and watch for wildlife including whales, basking sharks, dolphins, otters, white-tailed sea eagles, gannets, and many other birds. Views are stunning from any point on the headland. One hike hugs cliffs and sheep trails all the way to the white sands and turquoise waters of secluded Camas Mòr beach. The more intrepid can then continue on to the ancient woodlands at Loch an Draing and circle back over the moorland. If you are interested in hiking or exploring, please bring hiking boots with ankle support and expect rugged terrain.

Meals will be provided. Accommodations for dietary restrictions can be made as long as notice is given two weeks before the arrival date.
