Vilja Virks-Lee

Vilja Virks-Lee was a Geraldine R. Dodge resident, who came to WSW to work in the intaglio studio. She also worked with the Hands-On Art education program teaching young artists from Kingston High School.

Say Hello to our current artists-in-residence, Rut Say Hello to our current artists-in-residence, Ruthe Karlin and Natalie Beall! Ruthe is on site as our Artist’s Book Residency Grant recipient, working on her book “Karlin in Bed,” and Natalie (@natalie_beall) is on site as our Ora Schneider Regional Residency Grant recipient, experimenting with papermaking methods.
Every month WSW hosts Slide Night, where we hear f Every month WSW hosts Slide Night, where we hear from current artists-in-residence about their work. Join us next Tuesday (9/17) at 5:30PM for the first Slide Night of this Artist in Residency season! We’ll be hearing from Natalie Beall (@natalie_beall), Allison Elliott, and Amoke Kubat. (Slide 1) Natalie Beall is on site as our current Ora Schneider Regional Residency Grant recipient! Natalie invents new forms containing traces of functionality and fantasy with paper collage and mixed media wall sculpture. Allison Elliott is the Archives & Programs Manager for The Feminist Institute (TFI) (@thefeministinstitute), and is on site as our Research Residency Grant recipient working in the WSW archive, furthering the partnership between the two organizations. TFI documents and celebrates feminist contributions to culture by preserving and digitizing archival materials for public access. TFI promotes information activism and gender equity by infilling the cultural record to reflect fuller truths. (Slide 2) Amoke Kubat is on site as our McKnight Fellowship Residency recipient, a partnership between Artist Communities Alliance (ACA) (@artistcommunitiesorg) and the Mcknight Foundation. Amoke reclaims an African Indigenous Spiritual sensibility to reconnect herself and Black people to Earth and Water, as practice for holistic wellness. Self-taught, she uses artmaking (weaving, doll making, and clay) and writing to continue to define herself and hold a position of wellness in an America sick with inequalities and inequities. We have also slightly changed the timing of our Slide Nights: moving forward, Slide Night will begin at 5:30PM instead of 6PM to help everyone get home before it gets too dark. We hope this change allows you to come hear from our talented artists this season!
As part of the traveling exhibition A Radical Alte As part of the traveling exhibition A Radical Alteration: Women’s Studio Workshop as a Model for Sustainable Art, curator Maymanah Farhat (@maymanah2.0) handpicked select artists’ books to be displayed with extended label text. Over the past few weeks, we have been sharing a closer look at each of them, but we’re coming up on the end! This week’s highlighted artists’ book is Twentysix Plants by Susan Mills (@minettaln). Maymanah writes, “Susan Mills’s Twentysix Plants was published in 2013 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Ed Ruscha’s Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963), a pared-down artist’s book consisting of photographs with basic captions. Analysis of Ruscha’s book often points to the fact that his black and white images, taken while driving down various highways, capture the banality of these everyday scenes using a medium that had become highly aestheticized. Ironically, this photobook is now referred to as “iconic” despite the fact that its mechanized simplicity worked against such concepts. Twentysix Plants contains twenty-six pages of handmade paper produced from everyday plants grown or forged at Women’s Studio Workshop’s ArtFarm, a project launched in 1996 that encouraged experimentation in papermaking while working towards sustainable means of production. Each page shows the distinct nature of its material, which is then identified as a letter pressed and digitally cut label at the bottom of the paper. The paper is rough and mostly has uneven edges. A sort of meditation on papermaking, the book describes the hidden beauty of what might otherwise be ignored, much like the midcentury work it references.” We thank Maymanah for her extensive dedication to highlighting our organization’s work and the artists we serve by providing an in-depth look for some of the incredible artists’ books we have published over the years. The exhibition is currently on view at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art and at WSW’s Kingston NY campus!
As we approach the opening of Desire Rinse Repeat, As we approach the opening of Desire Rinse Repeat, a group exhibition featuring print and paper works by Celia Shaheen (@gothmomgothmom), Erin Moore (@bugprints), Lily Pinchbeck, and Thaïs Calvarin (@thaiscalvarin), we will be sharing work from each of the participating artists! Join us for the opening reception on September 14th from 6 to 8 PM at Cornell Creative Arts Center (@ccac.ny) located at 129 Cornell St, Kingston, NY. Today we are highlighting the work of Assistant Studio Manager, Thaïs Calvarin (@thaiscalvarin)! Thaïs Calvarin is currently an assistant studio manager at WSW and has been part of the WSW studios since 2022, where she has learned about artist book production and taught papermaking workshops. In her own practice, she is exploring the use of color in relation to abaca fiber's transparency. Her most recent series evokes the tides and seascapes of the Bretagne Coast where her family is from. Exhibition poster design by Celia Shaheen (@gothmomgothmom) The exhibition title, “Desire, Rinse, Repeat” is sourced from a postcard found in the WSW archives that advertised a 1989 performance by Hawley Hussey (@hawleyhusseyarts). Hussey’s “Desire, Rinse, Repeat (Tales From The Wash Cycle)” was a mixed media performance that told the ordinary yet mythological tales of daily life and the modern woman. The artists resonated with this title, as they are also bound together by daily rituals.

(Don’t forget to wish Babs a happy 91st birthday next Sunday on the 8th!) Maymanah writes, “In this silkscreened and color-photocopied artist’s book, Women’s Studio Workshop co-founder Barbara Leoff Burge intervenes in the global canon of art history with collaged images drawn from various sources, from comics to advertisements. Created in 1983, the book parodies an academic survey of visual culture and reflects the period’s rapidly increasing flow of imagery that resulted from the expansion of cable television. Juxtaposing a Russian icon with postal stamps and a scene cut out from a comic, the artist questions the status of images, or perhaps even the aura of art, that results from different categorizations and contexts. Today, Kunst Comix seems to anticipate the barrage of images that is inescapable with the advent of digital media.” We thank Maymanah for her extensive dedication to highlighting our organization’s work and the artists we serve by providing an in-depth look for some of the incredible artists’ books we have published over the years.
