| Paper
is to printmaking as banana skins
are to bananas, the structure that
contains and supports the delicious
product. In this hybrid workshop
we will focus on creating customized
handmade papers for monoprint,
refief and intaglio printmaking.
We will begin with the basics
of sheet formation, using cotton
rag, flax, and abaca fibers,
and the focus will be on variation
of thick to thin and opaque to
translucent sheets. Pigmentation
and the use of additives will
be covered. Then we will move
on to stencil work, pulp printing
and chine colle (collage)-all
methods that will later register
with printed matter. The second
half of the class will be spent
printing on our handmade papers.
Polyester plate lithography,
relief and screenprinting will
be taught, with an emphasis on
using the papers that were made
in the first part of the class,
to create richly layered prints. |

| Paper
+ Dye: Japanese Papermaking and
Natural Colors |
 Tatiana

Natural colorants are the perfect
complement for kozo fibers, and
working with both in the papermaking
vat opens up exciting possibilities.
In this class we will explore methods
of coloring fiber before the sheet
forming process, and discover how nagashizuki,
the Japanese-style method of sheet
formation, can be used to your
creative advantage while layering
and manipulating colored fibers.
All aspects of kozo preparation and
Japanese-style sheet forming will
be taught, as we investigate how
to use plant dyes, lakes, and pigments
in traditional and improvised ways.
No prior papermaking or dyeing experience
is necessary. |

Join WSW in collaboration with
R&F Handmade Paints as we create
handmade paper and encaustic works.
The first two days of this class
will be held at WSW in the papermaking
studio, where students will work
with cotton, abaca and flax fibers.
Once the basics are mastered, we’ll
investigate the potential of hand
papermaking. We will create papers
using a variety of hand papermaking
techniques including: layering,
imbedding, translucency and opacity,
stenciling, pulp painting, and
embossing.
Using these handmade paper elements
as starting points, we will spend
the last two days at R&F Handmade
Paints in Kingston for a wax-travaganza.
This session will begin with an introduction
to basic encaustic techniques. Then
students will create deeply layered
collages by working directly on the
handmade papers or mounting the handmade
sheets on panels. We will be saturating,
bending, burnishing, dipping, staining,
transferring, drawing, and carving
into this natural wonder. |
