2010 Fiber Classes
Textile Screen Printing

Instructor BioAnn Kalmbach

Screen printing on fabric can involve free form image making or controlled repeat patterns on yardage. We'll begin the workshop by learning how to stretch screens, and what meshes are appropriate for textile printing. Explore the full range of stencil making techniques, from the simple cut-paper stencils to photo stencils. We'll learn how to create repeat patterns from our images, and print multiple colors in registration. Students will be able to print on any fabric from tee shirts to yardage. Inks appropriate for textile printing and proper ink mixing methods will be covered.

"Ann is at home in WSW’s screen print studio, maybe because she helped build the space, but more likely, because she loves the magic of printing on fabric."

Fabric Printing with Dye

Instructor BioLaureen Griffin
Print your photographic and hand-drawn images with dye and dye resist.  In this class, artists will learn to silkscreen fine detailed photographic images and drawings by using cold process fiber reactive dye pastes. We will focus on painting and precision silkscreening these fiber reactive dyes onto canvas and other cellulose based fabrics.  The dyes penetrate into and bond with the fibers offering permanent and washable printed fabrics which can be used for upholstery, wearable art and clothing, or incorporation into artwork such as stretched over a frame and painted, waxed with encaustic, and sculpted with Paverpol.   Learn techniques for converting digital photographs into graphic images for photo stencils, and drawing directly onto the screen. Students should bring digital images and/or digital cameras as well as line art for creating artwork for printing.  It is recommended that artists have some experience with Adobe Photoshop.

"Laureen worked at WSW last winter and her techniques are a perfect extension of the standard textile printing that Ann Kalmbach teaches"

Shibori
Instructor BioJoan Morris

Shibori is an ancient textile process whereby cloth is stitched, pleated, folded or plaited and secured in those shapes while being dyed. In this 5 day workshop, students will use several dyes from the plant world to color fabric that has been shaped and bound before dyeing. The resulting patterns that emerge are fascinating visual and textural memories of the shaping process. We will use an indigo vat process to create beautiful blues. Indigo has a rich and mysterious history in the world of textiles and has inspired people around the world for thousands of years. Cottons and linens will be used for our work in the indigo vat.

The class will be exploring the use of several different plant dye extracts for cotton, linen, silk and wool. Students will explore the use of madder, a root used for red, peach and rust shades; osage from which we derive yellow to orange hues; and cutch, a source from the heartwood of the tree which will give us browns. As time permits, other preparations of extracts may be experimented with.
