Shibori is an ancient textile
process whereby cloth is stitched,
pleated, folded or plaited and
secured in those shapes while being
dyed. In this 5 day workshop, students
will use several dyes from the
plant world to color fabric that
has been shaped and bound before
dyeing. The resulting patterns
that emerge are fascinating visual
and textural memories of the shaping
process. We will use an indigo
vat process to create beautiful
blues. Indigo has a rich and mysterious
history in the world of textiles
and has inspired people around
the world for thousands of years.
Cottons and linens will be used
for our work in the indigo vat.
The class will be exploring the use
of several different plant dye extracts
for cotton, linen, silk and wool.
Students will explore the use of
madder, a root used for red, peach
and rust shades; osage from which
we derive yellow to orange hues;
and cutch, a source from the heartwood
of the tree which will give us browns.
As time permits, other preparations
of extracts may be experimented with. |
