2010 Book Arts Classes
Decorative Papers for Book Arts and Collage
Instructor BioJackie Wygant

Immerse yourself in waves and ripples of color, in this class you will learn how to make marbled papers using the Japanese or suminigashi method of paper marbling and European style marbling that evolved from Middle Eastern techniques. You will also learn how to make paste papers. Each technique will be thoroughly presented including history, base paper selection, techniques of color application, foundation patterns and complex multiple pattern application processes. There will be plenty of time for practice, exploration and experimentation. The last day will be devoted to making a collapsible origami box with lid to house samples of the week's work.

Decorative papers produced in one of Jackie's classes

"Catherine Wygant, a friend of WSW, introduced us to her sister Jackie’s spectacular papers. When I asked Jackie if she’d be interested in teaching she sent the most organized and thorough class outline I have ever received. I signed her up that day. I know this will be an excellent class"

The Photographer's Artists' Book
Instructor BioAnn Lovett
If you are a photographer who works sequentially or have always wanted to make a book, this workshop is for you. Emphasis will be on artists’ books, those that treat the book form as creative medium itself, rather than portfolio books. We will explore creative ways of using the page space and developing content sequentially through the pages of a book. We will spend 2 days at the Center for Photography in Woodstock designing your book pages with Adobe Indesign and Photoshop, and digitally printing on Museo double-sided rag inkjet paper. Then we will move to Women’s Studio Workshop to finish and bind your book. Participants should plan to do a fair amount of content development and prepare digital images prior to the workshop. Some experience with Photoshop is required. No prior experience with Indesign or binding techniques is necessary.

The Printed Book

Instructor BioAbigail Uhteg
Once upon a time, the fastest way to print a bit of text was to make an imprint from little pieces of metal, one for each letter, all lined up in a row. Today, letterpress printing and hand binding enjoy a revival as the aesthetic and intimacies of the processes draw more and more people to learn these traditional skills. In this course we will consider both the historical and contemporary contexts of the printing medium while exploring the sequential, narrative, and temporal aspects of the book. In the first half of the week students will learn hand typesetting and letterpress printing using WSW’s collection of lead and wood types, then make a set of bookbinding models that will reflect a variety of techniques. As the week progresses, each student will work independently to develop his or her own small edition of books. No prior knowledge of printing or binding is required.

Abigail Uhteg stitching The Complex of all of These, at WSW, Spring 2009

"Abby was a spectacular resident. She produced a complex artists' book, helped her peer residents finish their projects and made a spectacular stop animation video of the entire process. One look at this video and you'll understand what good hands will guide you in this class: The Complex of All of These"

Sculptural and Movable Books

Instructor Bio Emily Martin

Students will explore five moveable and/or sculptural books: single sheet flexagon structures, magic wallets, a double hinged cube, a tunnel book, and a carousel book. The class will examine the historical aspects of each structure. While working on these models we will also explore how a structure functions, its action, its general appearance, and how the structure can have a relationship with the intended content of the book. Also discuss a number of additional factors that influence the book like size, paper used, and choice of media. An understanding of these factors, along with development of technical skills will provide students with the ability to create book structures, traditional or non-traditional, that successfully integrate the book’s meaning with the physicality of the book.

"Emily is a consummate printer and book artist. She has an excellent sense of humor and is fabulously adaptable, exactly the skills we look for in SAI instructors. We are thrilled she will spend some of her summer here at WSW."

Rubbings and Tracings as Memoir
Instructor Bio Nancy Azara
Rubbings and tracings are probably the oldest and most prinitive forms of printing, yet they capture the “essence” or “sprit” of the object in a way that nothing else can. In this workshop we will make rubbings and tracings of plants, trees, tables, planks, stones, ourselves and many other things. The images, patterns, and marks that develop from these techniques will become part of our personal vocabulary, they can stand as the subject of a complete work or as a component in collages, drawings and paintings. Please bring hard graphite sticks or oil pastels, other materials that might make good rubbings or tracings and ideas to begin a new series of work.
