2009 Italy Workshops

We are delighted to offer Kathy Caraccio's Silk Monoprint workshop, August 4-12, at Castello di Potentino, our Tuscan retreat in Italy. Susan Fateh, the coordinator of our Italian program arranged to have Castello di Potentino, available for this exciting printmaking workshop. Kathy, a Master Printer with her own studio in NYC is back by popular demand. Home to the family of Graham Greene and nestled in a spectacularly verdant Tuscan valley, Castello di Potentino is an organic farm which produces its own top quality wines and olive oil. It is located 70 km south east of Siena and 2 km from the village of Seggiano.

For many years, the Greenes themselves have been deeply involved in supporting the arts. At the castle, they host a wide variety of year-round activities such as fine-arts courses, musical concerts, and writing symposia. Last year, our course generated a great deal of admiration for the seriousness and professionalism of its participants!

Work stations and printing presses are set up in a large room with baked-earth tile floors. Windows and doors are glassed, making it possible to work insect-free during evening hours. Students are also encouraged to use a secluded, adjacent courtyard which then leads to a spacious "loggia" (covered, open-sided terrace).

Accommodations range from individual to shared (2 or 3 occupants) and each room has its own distinctive charm. Bathrooms are private for each room, with some ensuite, while others are located next door. A detailed list of accommodations can be made available upon request and students are strongly advised to state room preference (on a first come first served basis) when paying the course deposit

Silk Aquatint

Instructor Bio Kathy Caraccio

Silk aquatint offers the richness of mezzotint, the spontaneity of action painting, the sheer washes of a water color, the vivacious surface of a palette knife impasto and the durability of a steel-faced etching plate ALL WITHOUT ACID. This collagraphic plate-making method is created with acrylic paint: painting white on to a black field, similar to developing a mezzotint image. The resulting plates are intaglio printed through an etching press with oil-based or water-based ink and can last for over one hundred impressions.

August 4-August 12

- tuition
- housing
- full board of 3 meals a day, including abundant vegetarian fare (extra charge for very particular dietary requests)

In the past many students have arrived either in advance of the class and or stayed beyond the workshop session making it difficult to set a specific location at this writing. Susan will assist with all intra-Italy travel arrangements for this workshop.

Single workshop $3900/single, $3700/double .
Castello di Potentino wines are not included.
Because of the popularity of Castello di Potentino, WSW must have a $500 deposit for this class by May 1, 2008.
